Is it possible to give you car a front end alignment manually by hand (without taking it to a shop to place on a machine)? If so, how is it done (for a 68 Camaro)

yeah, it's very possible. you just need a level surface, a bubble level, 4 jackstands, some string, and a measuring device of some sort (tape measure, etc.)
use the level on the side of the front tires to get them pretty close to straight up.
run the string from a jackstand at the front of the vehicle to one at the rear on each side, using the rear tires as reference points to align the front tores to.
i left a bunch of steps out, but if you spend a little bit of time on it, you shoulkd be able to figure it out. i think i still have a pic or 2 on the website in my sig of my Nova with the strings all setup.

and you can make some really net "slip plates" with some 1/8" steel plates, some chassis lube, and some old flat galvanized. With these you can get the tires where they would be when going down the road. Boy am I cheap!

That might work for rough camber and toe settings, but not for caster; take it to a shop and get it done right. Properly-set and cross-balanced alignment is critical to good handling and tire wear. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

i used the "string method' i mentioned before when i had the car blown apart last spring, and i've put like 8,000 miles on the car this summer with zero tire wear and the thing handles better than any car i've ever had. remember- even the best alignment machine is only as good as the tech school dropout that is operating it.
