View Full Version : quiet performance mufflers????? jvolk81 Jan 1st, 01, 05:06 AM Does anybody make any relatively quiet non restrictive mufflers. im trying to keep a sleeper vibe so i would like to keep it rather quiet out back. Any suggestions???? WE4 Jan 1st, 01, 10:37 AM I use Walker Dynomax stainless ultra turbo's. They work great on the dyno and do not reverb at rpm as others do. In the Turbo Buick's , drone at 25-2800 rpm is horrible. With these it is almost non-existant. I would reccommend full tailpipes all the way out from under car and it will lessen the offensive noise. Just my .02 Bruce WE4 ------------------ Thank You WE4 Bruce Toelle Performance Transmissions "WE GOT THE 2004R PARTS!" www.ptsnctb.com prmnsgn@aol.com tireblazin68 Jan 1st, 01, 10:49 AM flowtech afterburner mufflers work well too. My car used to be amazingly loud with stock exhaust, with the afterburners I can't even hear the car once I get to a constant rpm. They have a nice throaty sound when you're into it but cruising they're as quiet as can be. I love them, they're cheap too, can get them for 39 dollars each. good luck Tim DjD Jan 1st, 01, 11:03 AM I have to agree with Bruce on the Dynomax... I will be using them on the '69 when I put headers on it this spring... ------------------ ...Dennis The Cars: '69 RS Convertible w/SS trim (http://www.camaroslimited.com/memberscars/den.htm) '96 Z28SS #1679 of 2410 (http://www.camaroslimited.com/graphics/memcars/96ss.jpg) The Club: Camaros Limited Nor-Cal (http://camaroslimited.com) 68SS396 Jan 2nd, 01, 03:17 AM Hey WE4 thats the blacked out (bumpers and all) T-Type right? My father has a mint 87 WE4 with only 25k on it, original right down to the tires and everything. I'm hoping one days its mine. Sorry for getting off subject everyone! Chris Edwards Jan 2nd, 01, 06:16 AM I have those Dynomax Super Turbo's , while they sound nice, they are missing the noise that I personally associate with a muscle car. but they are Great for cruises. and louden up a bit "just a bit" when you crack into it. otherwise go with glasspacks, they rumble the best. but most of all , its your personal preference with sound that is most important, not what everyone else is running. ------------------ Chris's 67 RS can be seen at http://www.67rs.com JOIN THE CAMARO NET WEBRING! http://nav.webring.yahoo.com/hub?ring=camaronet&list 68SS396 Jan 2nd, 01, 08:30 AM It is important what other poeple are running Chris when you are asking what muffler people think is quiet, not what sounds the best. Sound quality is personal, noise volume is noise volume no matter who says it. I don't think glasspacks are the quietest which is what he is asking. I'm glad someone asked though as I am going to put duals on my Blazer but I want it quiet. Keep the remarks coming Hollywood Z28 Jan 2nd, 01, 06:40 PM I'm also running the afterburners on my car what I like most is you can hear the engine so if you need to troubleshoot under the hood you can really pin point problems but by the tailpipes it has a nice mello but deep tone WE4 Jan 2nd, 01, 07:16 PM Yes on the WE4......and does he want to sell it? I have a few.... ck it out at www.ptsnctb.com (http://www.ptsnctb.com) our cars Thanks Bruce We4 ------------------ Thank You WE4 Bruce Toelle Performance Transmissions "WE GOT THE 2004R PARTS!" www.ptsnctb.com prmnsgn@aol.com RockyMtnRacer Jan 2nd, 01, 07:21 PM Shawn Peterson and I both put new exhaust systems on our cars last Spring. Shawn went with the Dynomax turbos and I chose MagnaFlows. Mine sound too "glasspack-like" for me (hey Chris - wanna buy some mufflers?) but Shawn's are just right. You can hear the rumble at idle and there is no doubt it's a performance car when he gets on it. But, they're quiet enough to not attract too much attention. Best of all - as was already said - they're cheap! I'm switching to the Dynomax's this Spring. ------------------ Scott '69 400SB, Richmond 5-speed www.geocities.com/sdenning1 (http://www.geocities.com/sdenning1) DjD Jan 2nd, 01, 07:57 PM Bruce, Have you been to Kassabians (http://www.californiaclassics.com/) over in Dublin... The have 3 GN's right now. My father does want to sell it only because he rarely drives it and he just bought a new truck that he would like to put in the garage but the Buick would have to go to do so. The only reason why he still has it is because he only wants to sell it to me but I can't buy it right now due to funds and the possibility of getting layed off. He will sell it to me ultra cheap too. I do plan on owning it someday. Chris Edwards Jan 3rd, 01, 03:50 AM would the 87 Grand National be the GNX series, I thought that they made that in 87 to go out with a bang ------------------ Chris's 67 RS can be seen at http://www.67rs.com JOIN THE CAMARO NET WEBRING! http://nav.webring.yahoo.com/hub?ring=camaronet&list rojo Jan 3rd, 01, 04:08 AM With most of the muffler vendors having web sites seems like they would have some audio demos of their mufflers for their customers to listen to. You know, click here for the 40 series and here for the ???, etc. Set each muffler up on the same engine/header combo for fair comparison. It might be hard to realize what the muffler would actually sound like on your vehicle but at least you could compare the tones and loudness. Hey maybe they could do that for camshafts to. I've often wondered what the idle would sound like on this cam versus that cam. ------------------ Robert '69 getting better every day... (every pay day) 68SS396 Jan 3rd, 01, 04:52 AM Good idea rojo but different engines will make the same muffler sound totally different. Even the same exact engine with a different cam will change the sound. They could give you volume levels though. Chris the GNX is a factory beefed up Grand National. There were only 547 GNX's made distinguishable from the regular GN by a special rear end with aluminum supports, wheel flares at all four, front fender vents, a different turbo, different guage setup and a numbered plaque on the dash stating what number car it is. WE4 could give much more detailed info for sure or correct mine. Your right though, the GNX was made to go out with a bang and they did jvolk81 Jan 3rd, 01, 05:15 AM Anybody used flowmaster 70 series mufflers? Their website claims that those are their quietest mufflers. Hollywood Z28 Jan 4th, 01, 03:30 AM I have a friend who is running the 2 chamber flowmaster with 2.5 pipe on a chevy 383 and boy is it loud what size pipe are you planning on useing? josh schaad Jan 4th, 01, 12:00 PM along the same lines...does anyone sell header mufflers anymore? summit carrys one kind and they wont fit under my 68 (necks to short and hits the trans crossmember). i cant believe no one carriers them or even carriers bullet shaped mufflers (some carrier cherry bombs but again, the neck is to short).????? pdq67 Jan 4th, 01, 03:03 PM Blankety, blank, I still like the cackle of a pair of long "continental" glaspacks with full length to rear bumper tailpipes!!! But, they are loud!! pdq67 Hollywood Z28 Jan 4th, 01, 04:41 PM Thrush brought back out the purple hornie which can be bought as a headder muffler josh schaad Jan 5th, 01, 08:14 AM purple hornies neck is to short and will hit the trans crossmember on a 68. WE4 Jan 5th, 01, 05:46 PM No , you did a fine job..In fact the next rarest to the GNX is the WE4. They only made 1504 of them (again 87 only) and if you can buy Dads "ultracheap" I would get a loan.lololol If he wants to sell it and you can't do it PLEASE call. I love them and sort of collect them. Thanks Bruce WE4 ------------------ Thank You WE4 Bruce Toelle Performance Transmissions "WE GOT THE 2004R PARTS!" www.ptsnctb.com prmnsgn@aol.com |
