I have heard a lot of people (and magazines) call a 396 a small block. Why did GM call their 396 a big block? Are there both big block and small block 396 engines?

Are there both big block and small block 396 engines? tk modesitt Jan 1st, 01, 06:07 AM the only 396 that i know of is a big block thats what we have. travis big gear head Jan 1st, 01, 06:56 AM The 396 is a big block. Chevy built no 396 small blocks. ------------------ '69 RS/SS396 pro street 427/4spd/9" pdq67 Jan 1st, 01, 07:05 AM Because it's the smallest big block, if you overlook the (I think) tall deck truck 366 engine. IMHO. pdq67 Lonnie67 Jan 1st, 01, 07:32 AM You can get a small block stroker kit for 396 cubes. 350 block, 400 crank offset ground with small journal rods. ------------------ 67 Camaro 410sb 11.63 @117.6 67 Camaro 388 ET-??? website (http://www.geocities.com/lonnie67_1966) penguinjohn Jan 1st, 01, 07:12 PM because a small block can be bored to 396, hence its still a small block but with a larger displacement. john |
