View Full Version : 68 4 wheel drum porportioning valve?

I took my 1968 396/325 to bits in 1982. Now I can't find the proportioning valve that I think I remember on the subframe. Went to look at a 68 Sb coupe today and there wasn't one in the line.

Do I have one on my car? Isn't there one at the booster as well?

I dug out my booster and there is a complex valve body attached. Is this just a delay valve or is the proportioning valve in here as well?

I've searched Dave's website but I'm not sure if I have a missing part or not.

The car is a 1968 SS/RS 396/325 convertible with 4 wheel power drums. I plan to keep it original and be careful on the stopping.

Drum/drum braking systems usually don't use a proportioning, residual or metering valve, just a junction block that contains the brake failure switch.

4 wheel drum cars do not have proportioning valves just a metering valve. However since you have it apart I would recommend you install a power disk brake system. Mr Pozzi has a system, on his web page, for installing power disk brakes using drum spindles.

Green Z, you're right. BB cars, A/C cars and I THINK convertibles (Anything that put a lot of extra weight on the car) used the metering valve on the LH frame rail. CamaroBird's 68 BB used the same thing at one time. Put an ad in the "parts Wanted" section of Team Camaro and I'm sure you won't have a problem finding one. They're all the same, 67-69 Camaro and Firebird.

Mine is a bb and a convertible so I may not have imagined it after all.
I'll post for one.

Thanks

I've got two run-of-the-mill small block '68's (a double money pit). Both have the valve on the driver's side subframe rail.

Anyone have a photo or part # they can send me? Are they common to other cars?

Dave Pozzi; I considered conversion but it is a documented Canadian delivery car and I want it original so I want to stay stoc. I bought all new brake parts in 1982. In my tempetuous youth I only lost brakes once so I can live with it as a start.

I've looked at your site but can't find info, am I missing it?

What cars have it and what don't is unknown for sure. I would think your car would have it if any did.
I don't have a photo of one, none of my cars have it.
All that should be underneath your master cyl is a distribution/brake warning block that is rectangular in shape.
The valve would be on the outside of the frame rail. I don't know if all frames have the holes for the valve, I think they all do regardless if they came with the valve or not.

Some later big cars had a similar proportioning valve bolted to the brake warning light block under the master cyl. If you see a brass valve like that at a wrecking yard, grab it.

I need to go through all my brake valve info and organze it better and simplify it.
Lots of that stuff is replies to forum questions, and it repeats the same thing in several places.

Here is the valve info: http://ourworld.compuserve.com/homepages/David_Pozzi/prop_valve_info.htm
There are some photos of master cyls and valves on my master cyl page but most photos are of disc systems.
