View Full Version : Wheel brake cylinders - no plungers?
HwyStarJoe Aug 27th, 04, 03:55 PM OK, what's the scoop with selling new wheel cylinders WITHOUT the plungers?
I didn't keep the plungers from the wheel cylinders I took off these rear ends! I threw 'em out! Now what am I supposed to do? I'll call the parts joint tomorrow..... so much for putting the rear brakes on tonight.
ohcscott Aug 27th, 04, 09:41 PM you mean the pins/pushrods? i have never seen a replacement cylinder which came with them. it's really not part of the cylinder. some vehicles dont even use them at all.
you can buy them separately, but they usually have to order them. i collect some at salvage yards sometimes. those and banjo bolts, and a couple other things.
HwyStarJoe Aug 28th, 04, 03:23 AM It's been years since I've replaced a cylinder. Now I know.
The new one's (from China) that I put on this '73 Nova rear fit kinda tight! The rubber 'caps' on each end where the plungers go are squished by the bracket that they sit under on the backing plate. The bracket has two tabs that hang down and they deform the rubber on the cylinder.
I can just see them rubbing holes through these seals \ end-caps and causing me heartburn. Is this typical of modern-day replacement parts or should I look elsewhere for slightly shorter cylinders?
ohcscott Aug 28th, 04, 06:02 AM the rubber boots are supposed to incorporate a metal ring allowing them to be pressed into the inner diameter of the cylinder.
the ones you have will work, and for the price, they are fine. they should have only cost you about $10 each. the correct ones are made by bendix. they are about $25 each at advance auto.
HwyStarJoe Aug 28th, 04, 06:33 AM Oh yeah brother, they were CHEAP. At AutoZone. ;)
I'll deal with the squished boots.
HwyStarJoe Aug 31st, 04, 04:14 AM I'm still trying to find the push-rods \ plungers for these cylinders. But I need to know if they would have a V or an H cut in the ends, and approximately how long they should be.
If this is really nit-picking and going to become a major pain, I'll just return them and get a pair that are complete.
67CruiseMasterCamaro Aug 31st, 04, 07:39 AM Joe, those wheel cylinders are the wrong ones. I bought the same ones you did and they fit just like that. The bracket rubbed on the rubber boots. I took them back and went to Napa and bought thiers. The rubber boots are suppose to be on the inside of the cylinder. I don't have the part number handy, but I have the reciept at home and will post the number later if you want it. I wouldn't use those. I would use the Napa ones. The plungers I have seen at many Nevada junk yards. I have no idea where else to get them. I do know that they are suppose to be the "H" style. I will measure mine when I get home tonight.
HwyStarJoe Aug 31st, 04, 07:44 AM Awesome information 67CMC!
I'll rip them out tonight and get to NAPA instead. I REALLY don't feel like dumpster-diving in the junkyard, so I may just look for the Bendix version that are complete.
Thanks
The NAPA part # is: 37024 - $29.99 ea. He wasn't able to tell me if they come complete or not. (FYI -these are for '69-'75 Nova)
Stay tuned.
ohcscott Aug 31st, 04, 07:52 AM if you find a wheel cylinder which comes with them, let me know who sells it.
if you have a salvage yard near, most 60s and 70s 9.5" gm brakes should use the same ones.
the OE part# is 5464748 (link, wheel cylinder connecting)
advance auto shows them to be the 'H' type. part #14182. all the ones near me carry them as normal stock for less than $4 each.
Rick's camaro also shows them as the "H" type. if i had my wheels off, i would do a visual confirmation, but it's probably not necessary.

edit: i still type too slow.
the bendix come with the proper boots, but not the links. the cyls you have do work. they are not exactly the wrong ones, as they operate properly, but they are just not exactly right either. they are cheap replacements, as i mentioned before.
HwyStarJoe Aug 31st, 04, 09:02 AM You're right.... Part #1418-2 at Advance. It's the same four digits everywhere else I went and called also. #1418 for the pin, H type ends.
Bendix (when you can find them, which I couldn't) don't come with the pins. None of the manufacturers (AC Delco, Bendix, Honeywell, etc.) I looked at came with anything at all besides the cylinder.
Not even the wheel cylinder kits have them.
I learned one thing though, do NOT buy anything that says 'Made In China' on it. I just got back from running around looking at several wheel cylinders and they were all made in the U.S.A or 'Fabrique Au Canada' and they were ALL the correct 7/8" wheel cylinders with the rubber seals\boots on the inside, not sticking out like a balloon.
Live and learn. Thanks for the help all. I basically kept this thread going for others FYI in the future.
67CruiseMasterCamaro Aug 31st, 04, 09:44 AM Glad I could help Joe!
ohcscott Aug 31st, 04, 10:12 AM that's one of the benefits you get working on your own vehicles... you can choose the parts you want to use.
i can't count the # of times i had to put the china cylinders on vehicles because they were cheap. i had no choice in the matter, as it was not my car, or my shop.
as far as i know, i never had a problem with those cylinders giving out, or not working.. i have even put them on some friends vehicles... but i like the proper ones. it is the same type cylinder on many GM vehicles. i gave up complaining to the boss about cheap ****, and just quit. it's one thing to sell cheap parts cheap, but to sell cheap parts at a premium price is just wrong.
just like alot of other parts you get a choice. the cheap junk, or the good stuff. i have china fenders on my car. that was a mistake too.
