Looking for information, links, etc. related to installing rear disk brakes on a 69 Camaro with 12 bolt posi rear. Prefer fabing or buying brackets to hang readily available components, but open to all advise and direction.

Wilwood has a disc brake kit that also has a drum parking brake built in. They make it for either Ford or Chevy...I have the Ford 9" kit myself and am very pleased with the build quality and weight savings. smile.gif

Torker,

Thanks much for the link. It is easy to see from your car why your expertice is so valued. You probably saved me many hours of research and re-inventing the wheel!

89-92 camaro rear disc brakes bolt right up. The calipers are aluminum PBR`s with built in parking brake. You can buy this stuff cheaper than any kit on the market and it performs better. They are 11.65" diameter rotors. You can go with 79-81 T/A rotors by slotting the bolt holes on the 89-92 camaro mount brakets. The T/A rotors are 11 inchs in diameter.

So I get the calipers from a 89-92 Camaro, These bolt to the rear end housing on a bracket (do I make this bracket or buy one?), or I can use TransAm calipers by redrilling some holes? The rotors fron the 89-92 Camaro are also used? (but I can also use TransAm units by milling out the center hole to Camaro specs). What do I do about the emergency brake situation? Please correct any of the above if I misunderstood anything.

I`ll give you the exact run down on the setup. This is exactly what I`m running on my camaro. I am still in the process of restoring it.
89-92 camaro rear disc brake setup:
rear calipers(loaded)
rear rotors
rear caliper mounting brackets
parking brake cables
rear brake hard line that fits onto rear end
caliper mounting bolts(2 per side)
brake line bolts(one per side)
brake hoses

That is everything you`ll need from the 89-92 camaro to do the swap. You`ll have to weld on a tab to hold the hard line to the rear end on each end. It also serves as a mounting point for the flex lines. As for making the parking brake cable fit to your camaro, you`ll have to shorten your intermediant cable from your car. I haven`t actually tried to hook up my parking brake cables, but from looking at it, that is what has to be done. It`s not going to be that big of an issue though. I mentioned the T/A stuff because that was what I was orginally going to do. I was going to take 11" T/A rotors and slot the caliper holes on the braket inwards to pull the caliper to where it was seated onto the rotor. If you want to do this, then it would be very simple. The 89-92 camaro rotors are 11.65", so you would take that .65 and divide it in half. That would be how far you slot the hole. I decided that it would be just as easy to use the 3rd gen camaro rotor as well and not have to mess with slotting the hole. I like this setup because it uses all GM stuff that is readily available from parts stores. I haven`t gotten into brake line stuff yet, so I don`t know if you can still get the hard line. If you can`t then there is a simple solution to that. Either go find a 3rd gen camaro in the junk yard that is from 89-92 or get the flex lines and mock them up on the calipers that are mounted and figure how much hard line you will need and find someone to make it for you. Also, you`ll notice that I said loaded calipers, that`s because you`ll need them. They come with the parking brake hardware attached to the caliper and the hats that the caliper attaches to which is what bolts to the caliper brackets. These are floating calipers. If you go look on David Pozzi`s website, you can see the front disc brake setup that I did and I am putting on my camaro. I don`t know what you are doing with your front brakes, but if you have stock 69 brakes, then you will either need to use the T/A rotor or do my setup. The 69 camaro front brake rotor is 11" and so is the rear T/A rotor. My setup is 11.75" in front and 11.65" in the rear. Also you`ll need an adjustable proportioning valve to put on your rear brake line.
Hope this helps
