Im trying to change the steering coupler joint in my 69 Camaro with manual steering. If anyone knows how to do this please let me know. I have everything unbolted, but there dosen't seem to be enough room to get the darn thing off. After banging on it with a hammer as far up as it will go there's still about a 1/4 to 1/2 the thing needs to go to come off the shaft. The one that's on there looks pretty scary and dangerous, and this is my daily driver so please help!

Thanks in advance!

I did this long time ago I'cant realy remember but maybe you have to unbolt the steering column loose inside the car or unbolt the box when you finished put everything back.

It's six one way, and 1/2 a dozen the other! I would pull the box loose b/c you can get to the three frame bolts to it really easy. IMHO. Just try jacking your car up SAFELY!!! and wiggling everything some until the box moves to let the coupler come off and repeat to put back on.

Please let us know how it goes. Happy Turkey Day. pdq67

PDQ's idea is great. Also, you can loosen the 3 steering column retaining nuts and the 2 3/8" screws that hold the coulmn support to the firewall. This way you can slide the coulmn back and forth.

The easiest way to do this, is to pull two of the three bolts to the steering box and swing it away from the steering column to remove the rag joint! You might need to pry the spline joint apart a little to allow it to slide off the steering shaft! But be careful not to pry it to far appart as you will find it difficult to replace the bolt in the spline joint because it will no longer line up when you go back together with it.

Good Luck
