View Full Version : global west suspension parts?
boodlefoof Mar 12th, 01, 04:18 PM Is Global West's stuff really worth the price? They have solid body bushings for something like $90. Also, how are their Del-A-Lum bushings? They sure cost a lot. I am trying to get my '68 to turn some nice corners on a budget and it isn't really turning out to be that easy.
Teetoe_Jones Mar 12th, 01, 06:16 PM Let's put it this way:
On my 68, i had the original rubber bushings and ball joints. i had the original spiral shocks, and i drove the car with 4 wheel "death" brakes. When i fianlly blew the motor after 2 weeks of owning the car, i decided that i would rebuild the suspension. I choose the "best on the market"- PST's super poly kit. I installed it, along with some Baer brakes, a big block, the guldstrand mod, and some 17" rims. WOW. what a difference. I drove the car for a year, and wore out 2 tie rods, and the drivers side upper bushings. So i decided to pull the big block, and install a LT1/T56 instead. while i was in there i decided to try the Global West Del-a-lum bushings, add subframe connectors, and go with all Moog parts. HOLY SH*T! HUGE difference! I will never use anything but global west bushings on my car ever again! If you have the cash, and want the best bushing for your money, get the Del-a-lums.
Tyler
PS- don't forget to get the studded cross-shafts for the upper A arms too!

boodlefoof Mar 12th, 01, 06:29 PM Damn, I thought someone was gonna say that. Not that I don't want the advice, but I guess they are the most expensive bushings for a reason. The upper bushings are $100 plus the cross shafts which are $50 each. The lower ones are another something like $120. Ahhh well. I may just have to start saving if I go with them.
Oh yeah... how are the shafts different other using the smaller studs rather than the 3/8 bolt?

davidpozzi Mar 12th, 01, 07:17 PM I bought the bushings, subframe mounts and connectors. I sent the connectors back because they covered the forward inner spring mount bolt and I will be doing some experimenting with the springs.
They also hang down a bit in that area.
I'm going to do the weld in square tubing deal as CarlC has done.
I have a link to it on my suspension page.
You can buy solid subframe bushings from the circle track vendors that are cheap.
I haven't gotten it running yet to see how it all works, but have heard good things.

69er Mar 12th, 01, 09:09 PM Makes for a rougher ride but the cars do respond well.
67stock Mar 13th, 01, 03:52 PM If you wanna corner for 'cheap' (not all that cheap but not $2000 either) go with the Hotchkis springs or cut Moog's or something lowered with extra spring rate. I think you could get away with Energy Suspension bushings, get a big front sway bar, sub connectors if you want. Go with Moog ball joints, tie rods etc too.
Right now I'm running the cut Moog's 6041, 1" sway bar and only poly body bushings. Everything else is stock. Really old crappy bushings (besides the body mounts) all around, stock rear springs, etc. What a difference! I can actually go fast without fearing I'm gonna go off the road!
I'm about to replace all the ball joints/tie rods/bushings though plus throw the battery in the trunk, powercoat the subframe or at least paint it and all the control arms. I'd like to get the global west bushings but I really can't afford it plus I'd rather have better brakes first. I can corner as fast and tight as my tires will let me right now. I do need something done about the non-staggered 67 shocks in the back though.
boodlefoof Mar 13th, 01, 06:28 PM Thanks for the input. Yeah, I really want to make the car into a corner turner, but I don't have too much dough to throw around. I am planning on going with the hotchkiss full front and rear spring kit and sway bar eventually. Also considering the guldstrand mod. I basically want to be able to hold a corner with a new Corvette and make him think twice about the old Camaros.
About your setup, I think competition engineering has a weld in upper shock mount crossmember that might fix your staggered shock problem while giving you a more solid mount for your shocks at the same time. About two years ago I treated myself to some four wheel disks. It wasn't cheap, but cheaper than Baer. They look great, are all billet aluminum (dropped a few pounds), and most importantly they really haul me to a stop quickly. They are from Aerospace Components if you want to look into their stuff. David Pozzi also has a new setup for newer 'Vette disks to put on first gens. Looks nice and more affordable too.

Are you sure the big difference was from the bushing change and not from the 150 lbs less on the front end?

Teetoe_Jones Mar 14th, 01, 04:12 PM Yep. I drove the car with the LT1/T56 from Colorado to California before installing the bushings/moog parts. With over 800 miles of road to burn up, i can say the Del-a-lums made a hell of a lot of differnce over a few pounds off the front end.

vtec Mar 14th, 01, 06:16 PM hey boodle!
check with national parts depot! they offer the global shaft kit for $46.87. thats for the pair.
i have the full hotchkis suspension package ( springs, leafs and swaybars).
the car is still on stands but i can say they are some of the best parts i have seen.
i think you could get away with pst bushings or any other manufacturer of poly bushings. i dont think the global stuff is worth the price for the average enthusiast like most of us.
detroit speed is also about ready to introduce a tubular upper control arm package.
