angelglo Oct 28th, 04, 05:40 PM ok, so i took the air hammer to my rear spring bushing to try and get it out. well, no luck. how do you guys get this thing out? i pounded and pounded with much frustation and it looks like it didnt move an inch. any other suggestions? oh, im removing them to put in poly bushings.

JimM Oct 28th, 04, 05:51 PM hmmm.... the back ones fall out, the fronts come preinstalled in new springs.
Bring em to a shop and have em press out?
angelglo Oct 28th, 04, 06:30 PM jim,
thanks for the suggeston about bring it to a shop to have it pressed out. i was to trying to do it myself. after all, its not like i needed to do mill work to it or something. ive got just about every tool imaginable and i was figuring that there was someway i could get it out. i have a 6" vice i can try but i felt the air hammer had more force.

WildBillyT Oct 28th, 04, 07:37 PM Here's what I did for two rubber front bushings:
I tried drilling holes in the bushing first, which was frustrating and didn't seem to do much.
Rather than keep drilling, I got two 2" long pieces of exhaust pipe with different diameters. The first was smaller than the spring eye (enough so that it would go through) and the second was the same size as the eye itself. Then I put it all in a large vise and set it up so that as I tightened, the smaller pipe would drive the bushing through the spring into the other piece of pipe. Once it was pushed out a decent amount I was able to pull it out the rest of the way. Then I took the sleeve out with a chisel.
Everett#2390 Oct 29th, 04, 12:36 AM To follow WildBillyT's idea, I took a 3/8 inch drill bit and drilled out as much of the rubber as I could. The inside bushing eventually fell out.
Then, I took a cold chisel and collapsed the outer bushing shell. It fell out.
I used a wheel cylinder hone to clean up the bore and remove the rust, about three passes. Coat with ATF, then install new bushing squarely. I installed alum bushings with a inner steel sleeve for the bolt. Greased the bejesus out of them.
RickD Oct 29th, 04, 01:37 AM I too drilled out as much rubber as possible. I was then able to drive it out with my impact gun.
angelglo Oct 29th, 04, 04:08 AM thanks guys. i guess that is what i will be doing later today. this is just one of those things that i felt that i didnt need to take to a shop. i would have used my chop saw and started cutting the srping eye and welded it back together before taking to a shop. relax, im just kidding.

try heating with a propane torch with lot's of WD-40. don't overheat though. can you get a hacksaw into the shell right where the spring ends? if you can cut thru the shell you'll relieve the press fit. then things will start happening.
pdq67 Oct 29th, 04, 02:16 PM I put both my old '68 multi main leafs out on the pavement curb along with my new JCW three leaf mono replacements and got my old trusty propane torch out and burnt all of them out in pairs one Sat. afternoon.
Then took a big cold chisel and a BFT and whacked all the cans out and then let everything cool down so I could clean the three leaf main leafs up and then installed all my poly...
It took some time AND it did smoke some but nothing really EPA life threatenlly(Sp?) bad or at least to me!!!

Peter Constantine Oct 29th, 04, 02:57 PM I burned mine out, too.Just kept at em' with the propane torch and a big screwdriver until all the rubber was gone, walloped the sleeve out with a hammer and chisel.
67CruiseMasterCamaro Oct 29th, 04, 05:25 PM To get mine out, I drilled a couple of 3/8" holes in the rubber too, but used a air hammer to the edge where the metal sleeve comes together. This loosens the sleeve at an angle then breaks loose. The rust in between the sleeve and the spring is keeping it from driving out.

angelglo Oct 29th, 04, 05:53 PM ok. i got mine out. i used the air hammer to get the center metal insert out. once i got it out, i got my drill and whatg happened next got the center portion out. i was going to use my drill and bit to drill around the perimeter of the rubber bushing to loosen it from the outter metal ring. it started walking out the rubber bushing in a matter of seconds. i then used the air hammer to punch out the outter metal ring. i home the next one is easier.
