David and the others that helped me out, thanks a ton for all the advice. I completed the conversion about two weeks ago and just today had a chance to test out the new brakes. No real problems, cutting the spindles down was cake. The only thing left is attaching the brake hoses correctly to the frame and A-arm. I'm open to suggestions, here's a pic - hopefully it works.

picture doesn't seem to work, but it posted at my home page. You can go there by clicking the house icon if you want.

ps. When I stomped on the brakes today, this was the first time I really missed having a shoulder harness graemlins/clonk.gif I should have been expecting it to stop quick, but gee wiz . . . its a night and day difference when compared to front drums.

Here ya go Eric. I love my disc brakes especially when you come out of a modern car.

How did you cut down the boss on the spindle. I did the conversion a while ago and used disk brake spindles but they make the wheel stick out a bit farther. I would like to use my drum spindles to bring the wheel back in a bit.

Rick, the only difference between the drum and disc spindle is the length of the threaded boss you bolt the caliper mounting bracket to. If you want to move the wheel inward you can go to the two piece rotor system --- I think that moves the wheel inward when compred to the later 1 piece rotor design.

To answer your question though, I used a Porta-band saw to cut .610" off the threaded boss. I marked it at .610" with a scribe all the way around then I cut it a little short of my mark. Then I finished it off to .610" with my angle grinder, making sure the finish was square and flat.

David Pozzi has some good pics and instructions on his web site. Hope this helps.

No, the two piece hub will widen the wheel spacing about 1-3/16" or so total both sides b/c I'm going that way to gain a little upper A-arm lip/rim lip room b/c of my spindle extenders!!

Plus the rotors on top of everything alone add like a half inch total to the wheel width.. I think the mounting area thickness of the rotor is right at .25" thick.. pdq67

PS., it's the wheel face of the hubs that are offset different. David has them pic'ed on his site if you want to see what I am talking about...

The drum hub is the smallest dimension and the two piece and later, '69 style, cast rotor/hub are wider and are the same...
