There are two nuts, hold the lower nut and turn the top one. Once the top nut is off, try an impact gun on the remaining nut. If you can't get it loose, and the shock is going to be replaced, you can grab the shock shaft with vise grip pliers.

If you will re-use the shocks you are supposed to hold the top of the shaft with an adjustable wrench. it has two flats on it.

Use the locking pliers with the curved jaws, try to put two of the pliers on the shaft and then use the air impact gun.

if the shocks are getting replaced, just put a deep well socket on the nut with a long extension on it, and just wiggle it back and forth until the top of the stud breaks off- moving it an inch back and forth won't cut it, tho. move it as far and as fast as you can.
quick, easy, and painless.
plus, you get to break stuff, which is always good.

ok cool, i managed to get that shock of the car, installing the new one was a breeze... getting the old one loose did cost me a few busted knuckles though :(

I wish I tried the long socket and wiggle approach on my front shocks. My shocks were so old and rusted that if I tried to loosen the nuts on the upper shock mounts, the whole shaft would turn as well. My friend Rich and I took out the rotor zip with the metal cut off wheel and cut the nuts off. Took a while, but it worked.
