View Full Version : Steering box date codes?

Do the steering boxes have date codes on them anywhere? The power steering box in my 68 Camaro is 2-1/4 turns lock to lock so I don't think it's original to the car. Are the pressure ports the same size and fitting for most years? I need to have a new pressure hose made up to connect the 94 LT1 pump to the steering box and I want to make sure I give them the correct size. I'm getting air in the system and I'm pretty sure it's getting in at the flare connection on the pressure hose.

There should be a small boss that sticks out where the cover bolts onto the steering box. You may need to clean it off to see the numbers but it's visible from topside. Format, if I remember correctly is an alphabetic letter (probably shift) followed by a Julian day #, followed by a single digit indicating year. For example B1237 would be the 123rd day of 1967.

I checked the stamping and it looks like 332 and 7 but it's really hard to read because it was all double stamped and there's a big scratch through it. But that fits in perfectly with the 12D build date of my 68 Camaro so it might be the original power steering box. It's about 2-1/4 turns lock to lock so I guess someone modified it or put on a longer pitman arm. Now I just need to get a power steering pressure hose made up that won't let in air. The flare that was done on the LT1 hose doesn't look like it was done very well so I think it's sucking in air at the connection where the flare is.

If the return pipe (or the hose connection to the return pipe or to the reservoir) is not tightened securely, it is possible to suck in air and not leak oil.

However, because of the high pressures generated in the pressure hose, you should see oil leaking out even if it sucks some air at low pressures if you do not have a good seal.

Jim, I've read that the pressure line can suck in air too if the flare fitting is not sealing properly but it still won't leak fluid out. I looked at the custom flare and it's not nearly as big of a shoulder as the original flared end. I already put in a new pump, new return hose and new fluid. I'm hoping it's the pressure line and not the ps box itself because that will be a pain getting out with the header right next to it. Thanks,
Jeff.
