Ok, everyone, here is one for you. Where can I find a replacement rag joint for my tilt steering column? The bolted sleeves have pulled out of the rubber. Is there a way to fix it? Please tell me how.

Thanks, Scot

Please do a search here b/c all the info is right here!! It's been posted by me and others extensively in the past..

My car is a tilt so know what you mean.

And beware that there are four kinds, non-power-non-tilt, non-power-tilt, power-non-tilt and power-tilt!!

I mention this b/s if you opt for a complete coupling, the power and non-power gearbox ends have different dia and spline counts. Plus, the non-power-tilt top flange is a bolt-on and the non-tilt is a weld-on if I recall correctly?? It's been a couple of years..

Hope this starts you off on the right track..

The 1967 flexible coupling was shipped from Saginaw already attached to the steering gear input shaft. So the flex coupling came to the assembly plant already attached to a power gear or a manual steering gear.

The flange on the lower end of the steering column was either a stamping (staked in place)or a casting (attached with a pinch bolt). Even though the flanges look quite different, they mate to either a manual or a power gear coupling exactly the same way.

So, the flexible couplings did not care what type steering column they were being attached to.

The power steering gear had a 13/16 input shaft so the power flex coupling had a mating 13/16 flange. The power flex coupling also had a soft (4 ply) rubber disc to prevent steering noise from transmitting up into the passenger compartment.

The manual steering gear had a 3/4 input shaft and a manual flex coupling with the same size flange. The manual coupling had a stiff (7 ply) rubber disc. The rest of the hardware between the manual and power flex couplings was the same.

Thanks guys. My column is a tilt with power steering, with the pinched coupling.

I guess this is what I have, and will have to look for. Now to find out where to buy and a cost. Thanks alot guys.

The unit I bought to fit my tilt to my new P/S gearbox has a wire reinforced rubber pad that is a lot stronger then the stock clothe reinforced rubber pad.

But be careful handling it b/c the sucker is like a pin-cushion..

Where did you buy it from pdq67?

The metal screening that is molded on the face of the rubber disc is for electrical continuity so the horn will operate. The screen takes the place of the small wire or the metal strap that was installed on the inside of the original flexible coupling. It does not add any strength to the disc.

Jim,

I think my screen wire reinforced rubber pad IS made out of reinforced stuff b/c it reminds me of a steel belted radial tread!!

The wire in the screen is high strength, tempered stuff!!
