Need help with my Chevy 3/4 ton 4x4 pickup (my '67 Camaro is running GREAT - as always)

Was having sticky rear brakes (no grab - no grab - GRAB) when cold - on warm up, no problems.

Took drums in to be turned - couldn't do it, they said they were so warpped it actually stopped the machine when it started to cut around. - other side - didn't try to turn, too close to minimum tolerance.

So bought brand new. Got brand new shoes as well...

Put them on (done this many many times) - no problems encountered - actually went pretty easy.

Test drive - they bounce when applying the brake. Not a anti-lock type bounce - bounce the whole rear end type bounce. When braking hard, bounces harder.

While driving - no problems (so not the tires - although I've thought about rotating just to make sure) - ONLY on braking.

What do you think? I've never had this kind of problem before....

Thanks for help / opinions...

What year is it?
Here's some ideas.
You may have a brake proportioning valve mounted on the rear axle. There is a link running to the chassis to sense ride height. The valve adds more rear brake when the truck is loaded. If you have one of these check it out. If you have lowered the truck, the valve arm needs to be repositioned or you will have too much rear brake.

I had very poor front brakes using the TRW pads provided by a local parts store we deal with. I had to go back to the GM pads to get the front to brake well. If your ft pads are not GM they may be functioning below par, and the rear is doing a larger proportion of the work.

I've seen drums turned with too sharp a tool bit and they looked threaded. The brake shoes would snap out and back as the brakes were applied, made them grabby too.

Check your rear tires for a chord separation. I've seen them buldge in one spot from that. You can feel it on a front tire but the rear is hard to tell.

David -

Truck is stock '89 4x4 - not lowered or any suspension work done - stock tires / rims.

Tires run smooth until brakes applied - If tires, I figured I'd feel all the time - smooth ride until brakes applied.

Drums brand spanking new - as are shoes - Old ones were warpped as heck - Shoes & drums are both raybestos

I'm wondering if cylinder is bad and not holding both shoes equally... I'm gonna look at tonight and probably replace (feels like bounce is passenger side)

Keep the idea's coming - I've never had a problem with new brakes before.
