: I'VE HAD IT!
rolling-robert Sep 17th, 03, 08:57 AM lots of bleeding,
rebuilt wheelcylinder,
new brakeshoes,
shoes adjusted properly,
but still a brake that works for about 50% comparing to the other brake.
im working on this problem for 2 weeks now, im out of ideas, ill try and sell this hellcar.
Quess i have to find a less difficult hobby.
*sigh*
Spames Sep 17th, 03, 09:50 AM I put a new wheel cylinder in once, and it wouldn't bleed right.....found a big clump of crap stuck in the fitting where the brake hose goes into the wheel cylinder. Maybe something to look for?
Is it a difference in left to right side braking, or front to rear braking?
KevinW Sep 17th, 03, 09:55 AM Robert, try the method that I used in the following post
http://www.camaros.net/cgi-bin/forum/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=7;t=005233
Using a positive flow from the air compressor, really did the job, plus you do not introduce bubbles from all that pumping.
My power drums have been rock solid and working great all summer after replacing EVERYTHING in the braking system. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

Judd Sep 17th, 03, 10:13 AM Are they power or manual brakes? Discs or drums?
rolling-robert Sep 17th, 03, 12:12 PM drums
could give that air-idea a chance
a67 Sep 17th, 03, 02:38 PM I take it you are talking about one of your 3rd gens? The '84 or '87. From what I can gather you are having a problem with the brakes pulling to one side? Hence the work you have been doing.
If there is a pull to one side then it is 99.99% the front brake hoses. This is a very common problem with the 3rd gen f-body's. If you haven't ever replaced the front brake hoses it is well worth it. Jegs even sells the Earls stainless set for $70US.
If not a pull please tell us what the problem is and maybe we can approach this from another angle.
Thanks,
Bob.
rolling-robert Sep 17th, 03, 06:13 PM its the left rear drum brake thats causing the problem, whenever i use the handbrake or normal brake , it just wont brake good.
i had it tested on one of those braketesting machines, 58% comparing to other brake.
If i use that air-idea, should i use that rubberseal thats right under the cover of the master cylinder? (not a gasket, but the rubber one that covers th whole oilreservoir)
thanx for u time
a67 Sep 18th, 03, 04:56 AM Rear drums brakes are difficult to work on. The reason being the number of parts that also include the parking brake.
A common mistake in assembling rear brakes is positioning the shoes incorrectly. The shoe with the longer area of pad material goes on facing the rear of the vehicle. The shoe with the shorter pad area goes toward the front.
Check the brake line where it runs along the rear axle. Look for an area that may be crimped or flattened a tad. This will cause low pressure/flow to that side.
With the number of parts involved it is always handy to remove the drums from both sides and do a comparison. Look for a part that is bent or out of place. Everything should be identically symmetrical. Move the parts by pushing and prying on stuff. Check that parts are in the correct locations.
Check the area on the backing plate where the shoes ride/rub. Eventually a groove will be worn into the plate. If deep enough the shoe will hangup in the groove and not properly rotate into place when the brakes are applied. Welding up the groove is a repair for this.
Mismatched shoes side-to-side will cause uneven braking (two different brands/age/use).
Adjust both sides to the same drag on the drum. The shoes should exert a light drag as the drum is rotated.
HTH's,
Bob.
rolling-robert Sep 18th, 03, 05:13 AM HMMMM...
I did place the longer shoe to the front of the vehicle
and i can remember a small dent into the line
:( robert=screwup :(
DjD Sep 18th, 03, 06:28 AM Some great pic's in the Chassis Service Manual if you need a refrence... Also since your are only having problems on one side in the rear, if you still think it a blockage in the lines it would have to be from the "T" block above the diff to the wheel cyl.
rolling-robert Sep 18th, 03, 07:37 AM well, good thing i looked at it, the adjuster was messed up too, :(
i think i fixed that dent,it was a nasty one, but im notsure it is open enough.
can i just cut the bad part out and put a small piece of rubberhose over it?
quess not huh?
well, ill let u guys know if the brake works now.
thanx
rolling-robert Sep 18th, 03, 11:40 AM Okay,cool! the brake works perfect :D
i didnt bleed it enough !
it brakes even better then the other side...
maybe i should bleed the other side also.
well i couldnt have fixed it without the help of u guys
