: Replacement Brake Drums
Scooby Doo Apr 16th, 02, 02:39 PM I need help locating '67 camaro rear brake drums. I smoked and warped the right rear drum when the emergency brake hung up. I've since rebuilt the brakes with new shoes and a spring kit.
I've checked the autoparts store and many of the camaro catalogs and all they have is the GM service replacement.
Ricks first gen has drums but they aren't exact duplicates of the original AND it doesn't have the star wheel adjusting slot on it!
I really don't want to put the service replacment drum on my rear and have two very different looking drums. I would like to a replacement in kind but perhaps I'm being too anal.
What does everyone else do when the drum need to be replaced? What's the max tolerence for turning the drums down?

pdq67 Apr 16th, 02, 07:01 PM Dave,
Let me run this by you. Go to a boneyard and try to pick up two aluminum drums off the rear of say a late '70's to mid '80's Malibou type car. They will fit right on.
And if you want to get fancy, try to find ones off a late '60's thru '70's Olds S/W that are, (I think), 9.5" x 2-1/2" wide and are 5 x 4.75" bolt pattern, but you will need the complete backing plate setup to adapt over.
You can also go the 11" rear brake route by using early Chevy big car brakes that have the 5 x 4.75" bolt pattern, again you will need everything to do this onversion, too.
Just things to think about. pdq67

If so, there are a couple of front's on ebay. There is also a single rear drum up there also.

Sleepy-69 Apr 17th, 02, 12:26 PM The fronts are wider than rears...I don't believe they can be made to work on the rear of a first gen.
DjD Apr 17th, 02, 01:05 PM Do I understand correctly that the finned drums were on the fronts? If that's correct I have finned ones on the rear of my '69. I have never really gotten to the point of measuring the actually width of the finned and non-finned...

Scooby Doo Apr 17th, 02, 01:12 PM Thanks for the tip pdq67. I'll have to make some calls tomorrow.
No, front drums and rear drums are not interchangeable but thanks for the suggestion.
I may have to break down and buy the GM service replacement, but I'd really like to get a duplicate drum.

If all you need is one, there is a single rear drum on Ebay, $12.00

Scooby Doo Apr 17th, 02, 04:18 PM Thanks, I saw it but I need a finned drum.
Dave
Mr. C Apr 17th, 02, 04:34 PM Scoob Doo I think I have a new finned drum. I can check tomorrow, if interested E mail me.
Scooby Doo Apr 18th, 02, 01:04 PM I guess the answer is the junkyards are the best bet since no one repo's this part yet.

davidpozzi Apr 18th, 02, 01:16 PM Finned drums were not used on 67"s except BB or air conditioning, I think. Might be std for 68 up Camaros.
Everything I have is plain non finned.
