David,

My p/s box is out of a 86 Z. I got my p/s pump hooked up now. I ended up using a 1" longer belt than what it called for, why? I asked for the 68 z28 belt (I have stock setup with the z28 brkts).

I was told by GM parts man that a dry box and pump should hold no more than 2 bottles so far I've used one and a half. Does 2 bottles sound right to you?

I jacked the fr/ end up and added p/s fluid and turned the steering lock to lock slowly many times with car off. At first it jumped a lot then it got smoother. I felt it getting easier to turn. Then I checked the level in the pump it was about empty so I added more about 1" below top.

Then I started it up and turned slowly both ways lock to lock again about 10 times. Every time I went lock to lock I didn't hang there.

Then I left it down on the ground. Checked the level added accordingly and started it up again. I turned it lock to lock a few times more and after going to lock, it would jump a little. Then I turned it left and right but not to lock and it turned real easy and did not jump at all. I didn't move the car yet.

How else can I check it to see if it's working right, and that I won't have to remove a shim from pump? What are the symptoms if I have to remove a shim? Does it sound to you like everything is ok. Thanks

Was the box new or used? Did you flush the old fluid out?? I used a quart of fluid just flushing the fluid that came in my new Cardone PS unit out! Disconnected the return line and ran some extra 5/8" to drain into a large container, then I would start the engine and turn side to side 2 times, turn it off, refill reservoir, start engine and do again, I did this until the PS fluid ran clear (running Synthetic Vavoline PS fluid), then I hooked up the return back again and did this same operation 2-3 more times to get the air out of the return line. I then had to let it sit overnight because there was some bubbles (foaming) in the reservoir, then I performed the action again until the level was correct in the reservoir.

Brian,

Like it says above, yes, it is used. smile.gif Yes, I did drain it but did not flush it. Although there were bubbles it wasn't all foam. Looking at the fluid level there were bare spots (no bubbles). Even when it was warmed up.

What I'm hoping for here is a thumbs up saying that it sounds right the way I described it. What's the verdict? smile.gif

Still hoping to hear from David and others. Thanks

It sounds like you have everything ready to go! graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Just under two quarts is about right.
Just be sure to check the level frequently, the reservoir is pretty small and if you let the pump run low it will foam up the fluid.

If the pressure is too low, it will show up at idle, you will have lack of boost when turning the wheel. It makes sense if a faster ratio box has less leverage over a slower one, it needs a little more pressure.
Lack of flow shows up as loss of boost when turning the wheel quickly like when running an autocross.

Are you using Z/28 deep groove pulleys or stock pulleys? The Z/28 PS pump pulley was cast iron and might be a different diameter than what you have.

Sounds good David. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

I'm glad to hear that. I was worried since others were having problems with pressure and flow. Seems you were right on the money when you told me what size to drill that hole out too. I keep saying it, You da man! smile.gif

You are probably right about the belt too since I don't have deep groove. Thanks again graemlins/thumbsup.gif
