View Full Version : Pitman Arm Length
howard 1968 Mar 13th, 01, 07:54 AM I have a std. 1968 power steering box. Rebuilt the steering/suspension with a PST Poly kit, but the pitman arm is not included.
I have the 5.25" pitman arm now, with the 5.25' idler arm. From David Pozzi's webpage, this will give me a 17.5 ratio. If I use the 5.8" long pitman arm with the short 5.25" idler arm, will I have the 15.6 ratio. Is my interpretation of the webpage info correct? If so, are there any problems like linkage binding, etc.??
davidpozzi Mar 13th, 01, 11:59 AM That's it. Just make sure you have the short outer steering arms.

howard 1968 Mar 14th, 01, 07:10 AM Rick's camaro specifically lists both length pitman arms-5.25 & 5.80" lengths for power steering. Price is $70.00. Year-one wants $79.00, but doesn't specifically list different lengths. Anybody know of a better price?
Anybody know the answers to Dale68z's go cart steering questions?
davidpozzi Mar 14th, 01, 07:18 AM Dale,
If you use the short pitman it will slow down a bit. maybe to 2.5 turns.
If you put on a later 69 to 79 box, it's variable ratio and will be slower in the center of steering.
You could change the outer steering arms to longer if you would rather do that.
I wouldnt do both.
The lock to lock of the box has little to do with the ratio.
The steering arms hit stops on the lower A frame to stop the steering, so the box will allways have less lock to lock when installed.
I think GM usually made one powerbox with internal stops set for the slowest ratio and when the fast ratio was used by putting a longer pitman arm on it the stops were not really correct.
Just my best guess on this stuff, I could be wrong.

dale68z Mar 14th, 01, 08:09 PM When I first bought the car,it had the long steering arms.It had a huge turning radius.Kinda like my wifeslong bed extd cab truck.I had a set of short arms, turning radius is fine. Now I installed the longer pitman, too fast, turning radius good.Just throw on the old arms? It should slow it down without hurting the turning radius, right?
