I'm going to look at a used GM cowl hood and I wanted to know if there is any way to identify it is indeed a GM piece and not a reproduction? Are there part #'s on it or date codes that would be stamped into it somewhere? Thanks all.

look for a gm part number on it.

Kentucky Joe, Where do you see a part number stamped into the metal??? I may be wrong but I assume it doesn't have a GM sticker on it or he wouldn't be asking. I don't know of a sure way but if you know anyone with either weight it. A repro weighs less than a GM unit due to being thinner and inferior metal. Or ask a vendor the shipping weight of each although they may tell you its the same. If you can't tell don't pay a GM price for it

The weight is a dead give away. I believe the GM's also have stronger looking bracing. I will find out this weekend since I'm going to a swapmeet. I usually buy a few a year.

I have heard that the repro cowl hoods are
indeed lighter and also are a bit smaller
than the GM cowl hoods which make them fit
poorly. The gaps between the hood and fender
are greater.
