It seems that both rubber and the original style asphalt paper underlayment/sound deadner is available from the catalog houses. Which one did you choose and why? My 30 year old underlayment seemed to last pretty well, but it would seem that the rubber stuff would not collect moisture like paper?

Rubber will not allow any moisture that gathers under it to evaporate thus rusting your floor panels. I ran into this with my trunk mat.
