According to an article in Car Craft, March 2000, a steering box from an '84-'92 F-car with performance suspension and 16" wheels is a desireable swap for my '68. I found a '90 Firebird in a local yard that has what I believe to be the "performance suspension package" on it. It appears to have a rather large front sway bar and it's got the 16" rims. I couldn't check to see if it had rear discs b/c it was buried under another car. The power steerinfg pump also has a cooler attached to it.
They told me that this was the one I'm looking for though the part number on it doesn't match the one in the article. I feel prety confident b/c of the 16" wheels and the pump oil cooler but what other ways are there to check to see if it is the correct one? Thanks for any help.

It's most likely the one. a lot of these articles get re done every couple of years but the parts numbers don't get updated that often.
The only "numbers" on the box that give an indication of the ratio are two letters stamped in ink on the aluminum parts of the box. They most likely corespond to the build sheet.

Get the steering coupler with the box, it's smaller than the 68 box. Use any 83 up hoses that fit.

I am doing exactly the same thing as you and I have the same exact article, I found a 84 trans am with perfomance suspension but only 15 inch wheels it didn't have reardisk or posi though, THe numbers didn't match to the article for me either, but i am still going to use it anyway. YOurs definetly sounds like the one because of the cooler and everything, here is good information i found out don't take the coupler off that car it won't fit on yours. You need a coupler from a late seventies camaro firbird, the one of the ninety or eightys won't unbolt from the column and your's of the 68 won't work on the new box, Also if you read the article you need to do some modifications to the pump, but if you get the old pump from the 90 you can unbolt the hose housing on the pump, car craft I think calls it a orfice? take that and the spring and the other shaft beneath it, or if the pumps gone find another late model pump and take the same piece and convert it like cc SAYS which inludes drilling out the whole in the middle (looking down the piece) if you get the drill bit you will understand which hole to drill out not the holes on the side of the thing. Then take out the bushings on the shaft. YOu need the pressure hose off of a newer car too, because your old hose won't fit on your new box, thats why you get the new hose and the new orfice, so the hose fits the box and your power steering pump, if any questions just post a reply. IT might sound confusing if you hav'nt started but once you get into all of it you will probably understand Ihad to learn the hard way, I just hope my box turns out to be a fast ratio!!

I also am going through the same deal, I found a 84 TA with 15inc wheels big front and rear sway bar, but no posi, no rear disc, and no cooler, I have the same article but the numbers don't match up either, yours is almost definetly the one. INFO: Don't get the coupler of the 90 it won't unbolt from the column, your old coupler is too big for the new box because it has a smaller input shaft, get a coupler of a late seventies camaro or firebird it unbolts and has a smaller carrier for the input shaft it works perfect. also you need the pressure hose from the later model f body because your old one won't fit your box, the new one won't fit you old pump though, so you need to get the 90 pump or convert your old one by taking out the hose carrier, CC calls it the orfice? its the whole housing that unbolts from the pump you also need the spring, and the other shaft underneath the spring, if you can't get the pump off this car, get another late model pump and take out the orfice, then take a .146 drill bit and drill out the middle hole (not the holes on the side but through the middle of the housing) then take the other shaft and unsrew the bolt on the top of it, take out all of the metal washer/bushings. now replace your old pumps orfice and shaft with these, this new orfice lets your pump flow more and will fit the new hose. if any questions post a reply, this all probalby is a little confusing but the more you get into it you will understand. I just hope my box ends up being a fast ratio, oh yeah you should get that PS cooler while you are at it.

Well I couldn't wait for the replies b/c it seemed like too good of a deal to pass on. Plus, like I said, I was pretty confident that it was the right box. I got the box for $75 and for only another $45 I got the pump, hoses and cooler!!
I left the coupler behind because I had read somewhere that it wouldn''t work and that I need to get a "hybrid" coupler. hopefully this is correct. Thanks guys.

OK Your're on somethng I've got a question about. Will the steering box, front disk-brakes, and the power brake booster from a 70 camaro work on a 69? I've find a 70 with both and rear axles, carand all for$200 . Will this work on my car and do you think it worth it? Thank's and God bless all. James

Second gen brake discs and spindles won't interchange with first gen Camaros.
The booster probably would, the pushrod might need to be adjusted.
The steering box will work, you will need a PS pitman arm for a firstgen.
I've got a donor car list on my first gen suspension page, check it out.
