View Full Version : LADDER BARS
bills68camaro Feb 5th, 05, 08:20 PM HELLO ALL! DOES ANYONE HAVE ANY EXPERIENCE OR ADVICE ON INSTALLING A LADDER BAR/COILOVER SETUP OR A 4 BAR/LINK SETUP ON A FIRST GEN WITH A STOCK FLOOR? CAN THE STOCK REAR FRAME HANDLE THE X-MEMS? JUST A THOUGHT. DONT WANT TO DO A FULL BACK HALF BECAUSE I WILL LOOSE THE BACK SEAT. NOT DOING IT FOR TIRE CLEARANCE, JUST A GOOD WORKING SUSPENSION. THANKS.
69Project Feb 7th, 05, 04:00 PM Most folks around here believe you can get the leafs to work well enough. I believe DSE (Detroit Speed and Engineering) sells some type of kit and if you are really into something different Martz Chassis sells a kit that will allow you to weld in a Corvette rear.
The problem is that everything I have seen, you have to cut into the trunk to make it work right and for most folks the work it takes to convert to coils isn't worth it.
Everett#2390 Feb 8th, 05, 02:07 AM Either set-up, 4-link or ladder bar, whether with floaters or coil-overs, requires clearancing of the rear floorboard, hence, losing the back seat.
A good leaf spring and others here have had good luck with Calverts Sliders for a traction device.
DOUG G Feb 8th, 05, 11:47 AM Cal-tracs is what you want I think. Heard of some guys with them and good set-up suspension going as low as 1.3's 60'.
WildBillyT Feb 8th, 05, 01:22 PM Ladder bars are poor for the street (if that is a concern). A 4-link is a better choice.
bills68camaro Feb 9th, 05, 06:22 AM THANKS FOR THE INPUT GUYS. MY THINKING ON THIS IS THAT I HAVE WORN OUT LEAFS & NO TRACTION DEVICE & FOR ABOUT THE SAME MONEY AS IT COSTS TO REPLACE THOSE ITEMS (GOOD TRACTION BARS), I COULD BUY A LADDER BAR & COILOVER SETUP & HAVE A WAY MORE ADJUSTABLE SUSPENSION. BUT I WOULDNT WANT TO DO IT IF I HAVE TO HACK UP THE STOCK FLOOR.
pdq67 Feb 9th, 05, 08:20 AM As silly as this sounds, I like cheap "slapper-bars"....
They are good to at least 11 second cars........

DOUG G Feb 9th, 05, 11:45 AM pdq67, buddy has them on his Nova and 265/60/15 McCrearys with 4.56's, He pulls the frontend up 6-8" and runs 11.06@118...must work ?
I have them with radials and they don't do much.... but now have McCrearys too.
Newbomb Sep 8th, 06, 09:39 PM I know some ladder bar cars with a back seat....drive fine on the street...one guy i know real well "Paul" look in the pump gas drags, not sure which year, the viper was in it! a red 68 is what he had:hurray:

Yes, you can keep your back seat with ladder bars.
NO, they are NOT OK on the street for regular use. Sure, you can do it, but something WILL break after time, even if you use poly bushings. There is no degree of freedom allowed by the bars to accomdate body roll. Thats bad.
