View Full Version : Corvette calipers in 68 Camaro
Oreste Feb 10th, 05, 06:39 AM Hi,
I'm from Chile and restoring my 68RS Camaro (www.camaro.cl). I've had lots of problems getting the parts for it here in Chile. I had to buy most of them in the USA.
At the moment I'm stuck with the calipers. They are no good, and my options are:
1. Try to repair them here in Chile.
2. Change the 4 piston setup to singe piston (I could search for a nova front end)
3. Buy the Calipers in USA.
I like option 3 better, but I have noticed that they are quite expensive and hard to find, so my question is ¿Will corvette 4 piston calipers fit the Camaro? From what I can gather, they are a bit bigger, so Camaro calipers wont fit in the Corvette, but what about the other way around.
Your help is much appreciated.
Thanks
Oreste
davidpozzi Feb 10th, 05, 10:54 AM The cast iron Corvette calipers are not any more reliable than the Camaro calipers.
Check if you can have your calipers bored out and sleeved.
You can use a single piston caliper but you need the caliper bracket from any of these cars:
DISC BRAKES THAT WILL FIT FIRST GEN CAMAROS
You can use the spindle, caliper, bracket, or rotor from:
Apollo 73-74
Buick Special 69-72
Camaro 69
Chevelle 69-72
Firebird 69
Grand Prix 69
Grand Prix 70-72
Monte Carlo 70-72
Nova 69-74
Olds F85 69-72
Omega 73-74
Sprint gmc /El Camino 71-72
Tempest 69-72
Ventura II 71-74
They must be disc brake equipped of course. I believe discs became standard in 1970.
Some of the cars listed have the caliper forward of the spindle. You must swap side for side placing the Caliper to the rear of the spindle on the Camaro. And use your Camaro steering arms.
I'm not shure about brake boosters working from every car listed. TheFirebird , Nova, El Camino, and Monte Carlo do.
I've also deleted four piston year models from this list.
I have more info on my web page below.

JimM Feb 10th, 05, 12:57 PM have you contacted vette brakes?
http://www.vbandp.com/
They rebuild and stainless steel sleeve these calipers. They will redo your calipers for $100 - $150 each. I had some on a 69 vette once, they do a great job.
Oreste Feb 10th, 05, 03:28 PM Thanks for all your helpful information.
I was asking about Corvette calipers, because maybe I can find some here in Chile.
I was wandering if there are available any replacement calipers for my 1968 Camaro (it has original 4 piston calipers), like this one which is available for 1969 Camaro.

Hammered Feb 10th, 05, 06:10 PM There are reproduction SS sleeved 4 piston calipers widely available now through Rick's, Classic and a host of other resto houses. I believe the going price is about $125 ea. The Vette calipers will bolt to your brackets but you may have interference problems with the brake hose. You will also have to find a bastard brake hose.

JimM Feb 10th, 05, 06:13 PM The conversion kits that ssbrakes list are complete, with spindle, and would fit your car, replacing what is on there now, but they cost a lot, and who knows where to even get pads for them.
The brakes you have are superior, as good as corvette brakes. Unless someone's been grinding on the alluminum, vettebrakes CAN fix them up. They clean them, bore the cylinders, and press in corrosion proof stainless sleeves, then fit them with new pistons, seals, and bleeders. This came about in the '70's, when people who didn't drive their 'vettes enough were having siezed calipers due to internal corrosion. They work, and will last forever, honest... give them a call. My calipers were toast, and I had them backbetter than new in 2 weeks. Ten years later, they were still perfect.
Oreste Feb 11th, 05, 03:41 AM OK, thanks once again for the info.
I think the best alternative for me is to buy the reproduction 4 piston calipers in the USA.
I can't send the calipers to the US to have them repaired since sending them there an back will be too expensive.
Thanks
Oreste
