As I proceed with the restoration of my '69 Z-28, the time has come to address my brake booster. I was wondering since different cars have different idle vacuums, etc., is there a meetering device or something that allows for this? It is a 9204 booster, and looking inside the booster there is a black plastic or rubber ring that has a PN of 5467849. Any advise appreciated. I am not sure if it even needs rebuilding, but I guess prudence dictates that I will ( or should I ?)

Rob,

My booster was original and still working but it was painted black and I was not sure it would continue to function much longer after all these years. WWW.brakeboosters.com (http://WWW.brakeboosters.com) had a package deal where they rebuilt the booster, and refinished the booster, master cylinder cover, and prop valve bracket for a very reasonable price. It seemed to me to be a good deal.

Looks great, works great, and priced right. One less thing to worry about too. Brakes are rather important to me. ;)

there is no metering that i am aware of.
but there is a one way check valve.

the amount of boost is determined by the size and design of booster.
the amount of boost needed depends on the weight of the vehicle, and type of brakes.
the amount of vacuum produced by the engine may factor in there somewhere too, but most OEM will give between 18" and 20" vacuum, which is plenty.

in a vehicle with a customized low vacuum engine, people normally will add an electric vacuum pump, or switch to hydroboost or manual brakes.

at least, that's what i gather.
