Pitman arm won't budge, even with a good puller. When I removed the nut, rust was present. I've been soaking it with penetrating oil. Can I use heat without affecting the seals? Thanks!

I removed two last week and one almost fell off, ( the one off my 67!), the other came easily with puller.
I had to heat the crap out of another one last year AND use the puller. I don't know if it hurt the seal. It seemed OK.
Just don't heat red hot.
I used a acetyline torch and rosebud tip to heat it fast hoping not to conduct too much heat into the shaft. Then cooled the shaft with a wet rag.

Got the pitman arm off last night. Had to apply heat. The puller arms kept spreading even after applying heat so I place the puller arms in a vise to keep them from spreading. Also,I'll take everyone's advice and not rebuild the box at this point because it worked fine and didn't have any leaks. Thanks Dave.

When I removed mine, a regular puller didn't work but a pitman arm puller did without heat.

CAMARO SUSPENSION BOLT TORQUES
All are in foot pounds-ft
Steering gear mounting bolts-70 ft
Pitman Shaft Nut 140 ft
Steering Wheel nut 35 ft
" with tilt 1 ft
Steer coupling nut 18 ft
Steering coupler clamp bolts 30 ft
Tie Rod End nut 35 ft
Tie Rod Clamp nut 130 inch lb
Ball joint nut upper 50 ft
Ball joint nut lower 65 ft
Upper ball joint attach bolts (replacement) 25 ft (these replace the rivets holding the upper ball joint to A frame).
Steering arm attach nuts 85 ft
Lower control arm 85 ft
Upper control arm 50 ft
Collar bolts 45 ft (bolts that hold the large washer on the ends of the upper control arm shafts)
Brake anchor pin (drum) 130 ft
Brake andhor bolt (disc) 75 ft
Wheel stud (lug) nuts 65 ft

There is no way the two pitman nuts I removed last week were 140 foot pounds tight! Maybe 80 to 100. The one from my 67 was probably 50 foot pounds, this box was dealer installed and probably not torqued. It did stay on for 150 thousand miles though.
