I am finally reassembling the front suspension on my Camaro. I am looking for info on installing the pitman arm to the gearbox. I was planning to do this BEFORE putting the gearbox back in the car because I was hoping to hold the arm with a big adjustable wrench while torquing the nut. I also need to know if there is only ONE radial location that this will assemble to the shaft? My box was rebuilt and the shaft is now different than when I disassembled from the car. Can the nut be torqued with the gearbox in the car and the pitman arm against the internal stop of the gearbox without damage? Any and all info is appreciated.

I upgraded to a 3rd generation box and when I installed the new pitman arm, I just hooked up the rag joint and left the column in its locked position before torquing the pitman nut with a breaker bar and socket. There was no need to use a wrench on the arm itself to hold it in place.

too bad the column doesn't lock on a '68.

there should be a larger tooth in one spot so you can only get it on one way, but i haven't looked at one in a while, so.... ?

i always use an air impact to tighten it. i dont know if it hurts to torque it against the stop. i guess you could put a block of wood between a tire and the frame if you have to.
