: Aluminum Leaf-Spring Eye Bushings
TEAM CANADA Oct 25th, 01, 03:36 PM I am thinking of changind the bushings in my multileafs, I've heard of these aluminum bushings made by competition engineering, they sound good, does anyone have any experience with these? heres a pic

davidpozzi Oct 25th, 01, 05:51 PM If you put those in the front spring eyes, your car will ride like there is no rear suspension.
I have bronze solid bushed Guldstrand springs in my Camaro now and am taking them out.
It is especially bad on concrete highways with the tar expansion strips.
I can't keep the rear view mirror in position!

TEAM CANADA Oct 25th, 01, 06:52 PM Okay, thats what I thought, what about the polygraphite/urethane bushings, like the front-end bushings will these Squeak Squeak?? I dont want to lube them or oil them periodically. Basically I am looking to rebuild the springs with the best components.
RickD Oct 26th, 01, 03:48 AM I would suggest Global West del-a-lum. You get the benfits of no deflection AND no stiction.

RockyMtnRacer Oct 26th, 01, 07:07 AM Do the Global West bushings squeak? I'm running polygraphites in my car and it rides harsh like David said and they squeak like a herd of mice. I was planning on yanking them and going back to stock rubber this winter.
I kinda like the idea of using rubber in the front of the leaf spring and something better in the rear as David suggested. Anyone try this?

davidpozzi Oct 26th, 01, 08:19 AM Chicane67 has mentioned using a spherical bearing in the front spring eye with good results.
It's hard for me to believe that they work that well on bumps that "thump".
What works for one guy, would drive another guy nuts.
My solid bushings were pretty good on a smooth road but you could feel each and every phothole, tarstrip bump like someone hit your seat with a sledgehammer!
As far as Polly, I don't know. There is "stiction" but there is very little rotation of the spring to cause that problem. They would be stiffer than the rubber but I don't know about the ride qualities.
It seems someone posted here about them being kinda rough riding?
I think a stock bushing with a polly insert on the front and rear sides of the bushing would be neat.
Take a rubber bushing and drill one or two holes ahead and behind of the bushing and instert polly or plastic rods.
This would leave up-down stock, fore-aft stiffer.

yellowcar72 Oct 26th, 01, 10:33 AM The Global West bushings have a grease fitting so you can lube them up so they stay quiet. I have a set on my car and am impressed
Markus Oct 28th, 01, 02:48 AM I want to fabricate bushings like the Global west Del a lum.
I think you could get the advantages of both worlds.
One part Alu => No deflection, perhaps not so hard like bronze.
Second part => A Delrin insert in the Alu part. Delrin is a polymer and I hope the vibration is dampened by a very small amount of deflection. Delrin has similar attributes like Teflon (PTFE) => No squeak

TEAM CANADA Oct 28th, 01, 06:15 AM So from what I gather so far:
- Aluminum/Bronze: rough ride, too stiff
- Poly: Squeak Squeak Squeak
- Global West: $192, not cost effective
So how about good rubber bushings, who makes the best ones, GM, MOOG, ACME ??
davidpozzi Oct 28th, 01, 06:40 AM yellowcar 72,
How is the ride with those bushings?
Markus,
Check out Thompson Nyliner bushing inserts. Those are what is used in the GW front bushings. I haven't seen the rear bushings.
It might be possible to use a smaller OD rubber bushing from another car and make up a spacer for the Camaro spring eye.

pdq67 Oct 28th, 01, 09:39 AM Isn't Delrin actually ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHPE)??
And is tough as nails!!! pdq67
davidpozzi Oct 28th, 01, 11:12 AM It's tough allright.
Acetal is the generic name, Delrin is one of the brand names for it.
Here is a link to a page with specs on it. http://www.interstateplastics.com/meta/fmace.htm
The lower and upper ball joints are lined with it on my Lola. The origonal material appeared to be Nylon.

TEAM CANADA Oct 29th, 01, 07:26 AM RockyMountainRacer: What brand of polyurethane bushings did you use?
And also I have been searching for polys which dont squeak, and the company PROTHANE seems to have a good product. Does anyone have any experience with Prothane bushings?

Thanks
Rons68 Oct 29th, 01, 07:43 AM I've got the black (supposed to be graphite impregnated) Energy Suspension bushings in the front springs eyes on my '68. They've been in for over a year, and I've not heard any squeaks. Every bushing on the car is Energy Suspension, no squeaks anywhere. I did use lots of their grease they sell when installing them. The ride is a little rougher, but to me is well worth the improved handling that it seems to have now.
Markus Oct 29th, 01, 10:10 AM To pdq67:
Delrin is only a "trivial" name for (on German):
POM=Polyformaldehyd
Density 1,5 g/cm3
"Zugfestigkeit" 70 N/mm2

RockyMtnRacer Oct 29th, 01, 11:14 AM Team - I have Energy Suspension bushings. They're the only ones I have any personal experience with and these particular ones squeek far too much for me.

Joseph Oct 29th, 01, 05:42 PM Scott,
Did you lube those bushings up real good before you installed them with that special sticky lube? I got that stuff everywhere, on my clothes and even in my hair, that's how much I used. I have not experienced any sqeaking thus far with my Energy bushings and I have the complete car set installed. My car does not see any rain, love that L.A. weather, but if your car does then maybe that is what helps get the sqeaking going even if you lubed the heck out of the bushings.
Joseph
yellowcar72 Oct 30th, 01, 09:47 AM Dave, I kind of blew it with my rear spring selection. I went with a replacement 5 leaf dearched 1 inch and its real stiff. Should have spent the money and got the GW springs with the bushings installed. Didnt consider that the bushings might affect ride quality. I also have Konis on my car and there pretty firm. Its actually better on the freeway than around town, but its still "jiggly" for lack of a better term.
