View Full Version : Convert to forward steer
pozz Nov 14th, 03, 10:17 AM I have a 1967 Camaro and want to get the steering box and drag link out of the way. I've been told that the spindles can be switched and a rack installed. This would out the steering in front of the crossmember instead of behind. This car has a arm that bolts onto the spindle can they be changed. does anyone make such a thing?
pdq67 Nov 14th, 03, 01:07 PM pozz,
If I was to attempt this, I would use a Second Gen. car's S/F b/c it is front steer, there are a million of them around, it has taller spindles that help the front roll center thing and you can install the big car and 1Le's 12" disc brakes on it.
I would take mine out and sit it right next to a Second Gen. car's S/F and modify it so that it fit's like stock..
Then add a couple of steering shaft u-joints and a short shaft extension and be done with it.

PS., just be sure AND center the spindle spud/axle in the middle of your front wheel well so it looks stock!!!!!!
Mr. C Nov 14th, 03, 01:38 PM Check this out! Fat Man Fabrications. I have installed several of Brents ( Fatmans ) kits and they all worked great. A buddy of mine just down the street just installed one of these kits in his 67 Chevy II and cant believe the difference. Yes they are on the pricey side but like everything else you get what you pay for.

davidpozzi Nov 14th, 03, 02:43 PM Welcome to Team Camaro!
You can search our arcives for subframe info. FatMan, Martz, Alston, Wayne Due, Detroit Speed have subframes to fit First Gen Camaros.
Year One put a front steer Rack on a stock Subframe but had to do quite a fiew modifications. The whole story is on their website with lots of photos.

Mean 69 Nov 15th, 03, 03:58 AM Welcome Pozz. A quick question, what specifically are you trying to solve by moving the box and drag link out of the way? Are you looking to install a rack, or are you happy with the stock style system, only wanting to move it? Street, drag, road race?
Thx,
Mark
x44d80 Nov 15th, 03, 06:32 PM I've always wanted to ask this question but don't want to appear too "Stopid". The 75-79 Nova's used a front steer. Are subframes the same as the 68-74 Nova's? I know the 75-79 used alot of the same parts as the older Nova's. Does anyone else see where I am going with this?
Mr. C Nov 16th, 03, 05:08 AM Subframes after 74 where different. 68 To 74 Nova subframes where interchangable with the 67 To 69 Camaro subframes.
pdq67 Nov 16th, 03, 10:55 AM Aren't the later cars S/F's the same just as the earlier cars S/F's are?? pdq67
MrAbody Nov 16th, 03, 01:41 PM I see where you are going. The question is, are the 75-79 nova subframes identical to the 2nd gen F-body, or will they bolt into a first gen f-body only with front steer? I doubt we could be that lucky.
Chevy Kid Nov 16th, 03, 01:48 PM No, the two subframes are not the same. I wish we were that lucky! There was a guy who had an early 70's Nova and converted his frame to the 75-79 style in Hot Rod Magazine about a year or so ago. As I recall, he had to make floorpan and mounting bolt location changes. Unfortunately, not even close to a bolt in.

novaderrik Nov 16th, 03, 04:26 PM 68-74 X body (Nova, etc.) have the same subframe as 67-69 F body (Camaro, Firebird)- well, not 100% identical, but functionally interchangable (different bumper mount bolt holes and steering linkage parts like pitman arm and center link and minor details like that). these are rear steer with the steering linkage behind the crossmember.
70.5-81 F-body have the same subframe as 75-79 X body. these are front steer and have the linkage in front of the crossmember and use all different parts from the old stuff that isn't interchangable with the rear steer cars- except for the steering box itself and MAYBE the brake calipers.
i have heard that the way Year One did the front steer rack conversion has a few geometry problems, and they put the sway bar back behind the crossmember where the steering linkage used to be, which really only made room on the driver's side where the steering box used to be. seems like a waste of time to do it that way.
