My 68 Camaro has power steering and about 130k miles. I know the pitman arm needs replaced, but with this many miles should the whole steering box be rebuilt. If so, is it best to just buy a rebuilt box or can I do it myself? Just how difficult is it??? I've done just about everything else myself, but never messed with a power steering box.
Suggestions and direction appreciated.

Mine has 150k miles on it and is still good, even the pitman arm end joint. I greased it a fiew times durning it's life.
So check the pitman for looseness, it might be OK.
The box may be OK too. You can take up wear by turning the adjuster on top. Just take up the freeplay with the steering gear centered on it's high spot.
If you adjust it off center, it will get too tight on center.

Rebuilding a power steering box is no where near as difficult as it looks in the shop manual. I could not comprehend the instructions in the shop manual until I actually disassembled an old box I didn't care about. It all makes a lot more sense when you see the actual relationship of the parts. If you do disassemble it, do it on a tray of some kind because the steel balls will fall out and if they fall onto the floor they will bounce all over the place.(it took me hours to find them all) The only reason I rebuilt mine was because a seal was leaking. It was a high mileage box but there didn't seem to be any wear. If its not leaking I wouldn't bother with it.

If it does leak you can replace the seals individually. If you do take apart your box,be careful, some of the stuff needs to be indexed properly.I had the same problems with the balls as Kevin.Been 10 years since I've taken one apart.
