View Full Version : J versus straight panhard bar

I was poking around a circle track catalog and saw panhard bars that have a J bend or some sort of angle. This would make the frame side mounting location alot easier, but I wonder where the roll center would be? With a straight bar mounted perfectly horizontally, the rear roll center height is at the same height as the bar if one has horizontal lower control arms (I am think 3 or 4 link suspension here). Is the RRCH at the midpoint between to the two bar attachment points for a bent bar?

It's where an imaginary straight bar WOULD have crossed the centerline. Where the bar goes between the mounts doesn't affect the geometry but it could affect things if the bar were to flex. Check how heavy a car the J bar is made for. I believe those bars are made to arch over the pinion area of the diff.

The words I used didn't get across what I meant: I assumed the bar would be symmetrically placed and by midpoint I meant the midpoint between the two attachment points. Given that and the horizontal non-converging LCAs, the midpoint I was thinking of is the same as crossing of the imaginary straight bar with the centerline.

Your point about the strength of the bar is a valid one - I will have to look into that.
