I have a 68 RS in bad need of a posi-unit and gears. It has a single trac with 3.08 gears and I think it has a 8.2 ring gear, which seems to be a little unusual when trying to order parts.Do you recommend just trashing this complete axle and finding a different one or is there parts out there for this.It is about 400 hp.small block with a 125 shot plate under the carb.with factory rallys. Thanks for any help with this matter.

Hey, like the name. Welcome to the board. You will receive many different opinions but, I guess I'll take advantage and give you mine first. If your car isn't a Friday/Saturday night 1/4 mile rocket you could just get your 8.2 done up with a new EATON posi unit and pick your gears according to your style. Maybe put on some C-CLIP eliminators to beef it up. OR, this is what I almost did before I found my 12 bolt. Get a PowerTrax locker unit. Not the full time locker unit but, the more expensive one that fully disengages when cornering. They run about $430 but you don't have to screw with ring and pinion. Supposedly you can do it in your driveway. It just depends on your taste, driving style and future plans for the car. My 10 bolt at least 3.36 gears which made it bearable. The 3.08 gears would drive me nuts. Unless, of course, that you plan to put an overdrive tranny in the car and the 3.08 would be just about perfect for any overdrive set up due to the steep first gears. You could look for an 8.5 10 bolt out of a Nova and that will bolt right in. Plus, many in here think that the 8.5 is worth rebuilding and some feel that the 8.5 is just as strong as the 12 bolt. Good luck graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Of course, you could just rob a bank and find a couple grand and pick up a Currie 9 inch or Moser 12 bolt. Built to whatever you want. They price them in stages according to how complete or incomplete it comes. That would be nice tongue.gif

Just a thought here, I went from 4:11 posi to 3.08 Eaton Posi for cruising since I dont race it, You can find alot of information on the change over if you post your question in the Tranny and Differential section. Judd has some good ideas there, and several dealers in Eaton hang out in the tranny section for even more ideas. Also try a 'search' over there too for good reading.
Good luck

71-74 novas have the 8.5. If you run street tires no slicks the 8.2 will hold up.Slicks & dragstrip you need atleast a 8.5.
