My rag joint is bad so I got just the replacement rubber disc, and I cant get the old one off. I can take the hole coupler off the car, but cant get the bottom piece and the two pins to come off the old rubber. I can wiggle the pins and see them move. How do they come out? or dont they?

I don't know how they come out, I had the unfortunate experience of them taking themselves out while I was driving. That was scary.

PS. How do you like those Delta Flow mufflers?

You have to grind or cut the back of the two pins that hold it in place off and drive them out. The new coupler should have come with bolt in replacement pins, mine did. I just went through this not too long ago.

(Boodlefoof, the delta flows are ok, they are pretty quiet really, But now thats with 2" exhaust and stock manifolds. I have thorley try-ys to put on and getting 2.5" exhaust soon. Hopefully it will sound better/louder)

Ok looks like I am going to order a hole new coupler instead.

My problem now is I put all the old stuff back on and now my steering is REAL stiff in some spots. Whats up with that. This is not good. I probably shouldnt even drive it like this.
please help

Thanks! I am probably going to go ahead and get the delta flow 2 and a half inch system in the next couple of months.

Sounds like you have something binding, can you post a digital photo of how it's setup now?

Thats what I cant understand, everything is exactly back where it was before, and now its binding up.

Boodlefoof,

This is off the subject here, but I have the 2.5" american thunder system on my 67 with the delta flows....I LOVE it!!! If you want to ask me ANY questions about it, email me. I will be more than glad to talk to you about the system.

Murf - I am a huge proponent of replacing the entire rag joint. I had a car in high school that the rag joint failed on. The steering wheel was COMPLETELY disconnected from the steering linkage. I still thank God to this day I was going a couple of miles an hour turning into a parking space as minutes before, I was at highway speed. Ground Up who sponsors this site sells a very nice, complete rag joint for $55-60. For your safety, I recommend it!!

I agree, you should replace the rag joint. It is too important to mess with. Be sure that you get the one that is for your car. Be it a car with powersteering or one without. It does make a difference in the way it fits.

its still real stiff, I messed with it some more, didnt help much. Also the ignition key is stiffer to turn off. Is there something inside the column that could be binding up? Any ideas?

I've been there, done that, In my case the problem was that the slip joint on the top end of the shaft was bad also. after replacing the rag joint, there was a binding point when turning the wheel. I tried every poss. combination of reassebly on the rag joint, with no improvement. I bought a used shaft in good cond. from a junk yard. End of problem. Get a new one, it may save a life! Good luck!

Pardon me but what is the slip joint

Try unbolting the rag joint, there should be some play there, allowing you to push the shaft up towards the steering column a little. If you have no play there, start investigating what happened, because you do need some play or you will bind.

Don't try to band-aid the steering! Buy a new complete rag joint - the "repair kits" are a band-aid. Also, follow the sequence outlined in UPC 9 in the A.I.M. to re-align it when you put it all back together, or you'll have a bind (and don't forget to remove the plastic alignment collars when you're done, like the A.I.M. says). Would you buy a band-aid repair kit for your brakes? Why would you want to do it for your steering?
