: Emergency brake cable question
kz1000ltd Sep 3rd, 04, 11:14 AM Currently in the process of installing new headers and exhaust on my 69, while underneath the car for the first time, noticed the emergency brake cable has WAAAAAY too much slack in it, it's almost like it's missing a piece to keep the tension or something. It hasn't work since day one, goes all the way to the floor in the car, and you can still see the cable hanging underneath! Does anyone have a picture underneath their car that would show the routing of the cable(s)? More specifically, the "front" section of the cable by the tranny, that's where I suspect the problem lies. I didn't have my digital camera with me or I would have shot a pic, I will if I need to! Thanks guys!!!! KZ
69X11SS Sep 3rd, 04, 11:19 AM There should be a rod with two hooks in it that attaches to the right side of the subframe and helps keep the slack out of the cable. If it is missing, that would account for the hanging cable. If the hook is intact, the cable could just be stretched out and needs to be replaced.
kz1000ltd Sep 3rd, 04, 11:23 AM It's that rod and hook that I think are missing, and you said this is attached to the subframe on the passenger side? That's what I need to see a picture of, anybody have one???

There is a hook on one side that goes into the subframe and hooks onto the cable to take up the slack and guide the cable to the rear cables. The other side is the cable that comes out of the firewall and routes through the subframe and on the end of it is a threaded rod that is part of the cable. The threaded rod goes thru a bracket that the cable can slide thru. This part is adjustable. The rear cables have a piece that attaches them to the long cable that goes to the back.
kz1000ltd Sep 3rd, 04, 01:42 PM That's what I'm missing, the HOOK that goes into the subframe on the passenger side. Just went outside and dug around in a box of parts that came with the car, shazaam! There it is!!! Don't know why they left it off, but it's fixin' to go back on! Thanks for the the pic Jonesy!!! KZ
Jonesy Sep 3rd, 04, 01:58 PM No problem KZ. Most of the components of the e-brake system are still readily available.
There are a couple more pics in my signature.
boodlefoof Sep 3rd, 04, 05:06 PM Hey KZ, haven't seen you on in awhile! Welcome back! (or, if you have been here all along and I am just not observant... disregard.) graemlins/beers.gif
kz1000ltd Sep 3rd, 04, 06:00 PM Spent a few months on the dark side over at Chevelles.net.......then, regained my senses and got another 69 Camaro!!! smile.gif
67CruiseMasterCamaro Sep 3rd, 04, 07:29 PM Does anyone know the correct length for 67's intermediate cable? I have one that is 88" and compared to my original that came with the car was 79"? Is there a difference in cables and years?
67CruiseMasterCamaro Sep 5th, 04, 07:51 PM No answers huh?
Jonesy Sep 12th, 04, 07:02 PM My original cable on my 69 is also 79". I bought an NOS one and did not bother to measure it. I have it installed and it works fine. I do recall matching the new cables up with the old and everything was okay. I would say 88" is too long and may not work for you.
69X11SS Sep 13th, 04, 04:56 AM I'll have to measure the one on the 75 but I think that you may have a second gen intermediate cable.
Ken/68RS Sep 14th, 04, 08:19 AM Hey guys… wear did you get your new E- brake cable?.. And the hanger as well… I need it all for my 68. It does not seem to be a item I see from the " normal"… year one, Rick's ect... Camaro sites…
NOEL67 Sep 14th, 04, 10:52 AM I just recently saw the cables in the Rick's catalog.

Ken/68RS Sep 15th, 04, 03:47 AM Noel, .. do you remember wear on Rick"s site you saw them?. I looked through all his brake stuff and did a search for e- brake... and found nothing. I might have just missed it... but if you can point me in the right direction...That would be cool... thanks.
Run269 Sep 15th, 04, 07:18 AM ken/68rs,
give stainless steel brakes corp. a call. i had to order a custom length intermediate cable in order to make their rear disc conversion e-brakes work on my 69.
cost me $33 dollars for a stainless steel cable, and had it in about a week. i still have the unused cable if you're interested, i also have an old original one too. not sure if 68 will interchange with 69 but if they will you can have your choice. be more than happy to get it out of my garage. graemlins/thumbsup.gif
Ken/68RS Sep 15th, 04, 11:28 AM Run, sounds good.. Let me check on the 69/68 interchange on the cables…if they will work I will take whatever works. So why did you have the one cable in for only a week?... Just wondering….oh and thanks man.. Very cool of u.
Run269 Sep 15th, 04, 03:59 PM ken/68rs,
i meant i recieved the special ordered (longer) cable from ssbc in about a week. i never installed the one i was replacing. i bought ssbc's rear disc conversion and in order to make the e-brakes work i had to fabricate a few things. this caused the stock length cable to be too short. i had to special order a new one about 7" longer. i'll dig around tomorrow and find the original length new stainless one and my old crusty one. you can have your pick of the two if they will work for you.
