View Full Version : Power vs. Manual

My 67 currently has manual drum brakes. I am going to be upgrading to four wheel discs soon. I will have the choice between a manual system or power. The fact that they even sell a kit with a manual master cylinder, indicates to me that there must be some people who prefer manually operated brakes.
I wonder if I could get some pros and cons for both systems, to help me decide.
Do some people prefer manual just because it's slightly less expensive? Or is there some other compelling reason?
Thanks,
Rich

I stayed with manual becuase it gives the engine compartment a cleaner look, and I didn't want to worry about if my cam's to big and woulnd't pull enough vacuum.

I am sticking with manual because of the better braking to road feel. I actually like it way better than power. It seems to me that you can control your braking better in the snow/ice with manual brakes.
Advantages- no big power booster to stare at, dont have to worry about your cam not making vacuum.
A possible disadvantage would be if you are not strong enough to operate the manual brakes when you need to come to a screeching halt. Like little women for example might not be strong enough

I agree with Murfys_Law, you get much better road feel with manual brakes, especially in the rain. I wouldn't want to be without power steering but I never missed not having power brakes at all.

Dont listen to these guys, get power your leg will thank you for it, also ive never heard of a peformance car with four wheel disc to have manual. I have a 71 with four wheel disc, and i got a smaller power booster from early/late eightys camaro with the plastic master cylinder, I would hate to have manual especially if you are going to drive this car a lot. but if you do have a humongous cam sometimes it is better to have manual brakes but if you have a cam that big you probally don't drive the car on the street that much anyway.

If your cam drops off the vacuum, you can put in a vacuum can made just for this. They're not that expensive either.
