View Full Version : rf caliper not working
neonblue 69 Apr 11th, 04, 11:36 AM My rf disc caliper is not working. Doesn't seem to be getting fluid to that side. Could the splitter be bad? The calipers, hoses,mc is fairly new. And I don't see a kink in the line anywhere. Help! I want to drive my car. Thanks John
davidpozzi Apr 11th, 04, 04:02 PM Is the pedal low? if so, there may be air in the system due to a leak, maybe a bad bleeder. Can you get fluid out of the bleeder when bleeding the brakes?
Is the caliper binding in it's brackets?
David
neonblue 69 Apr 11th, 04, 05:12 PM David the pedal is low and I do not see any fluid leaking on the ground. Brake fluid does come out of the rf bleeder. How do I tell if the caliper is binding? When I have someone in the car pushing the pedal the rf caliper will not stop the rotor from turning. Thanks for your help. John
davidpozzi Apr 11th, 04, 07:53 PM You may have a bad hose or bleeder. When you bleed the brakes use a clear plastic hose on the bleeder. Put some teflon tape on the bleeder threads to prevent air from sucking in, bleed the brakes and you can tell when the air is out when there are no more bubbles.
Take a good light and look at the bleeder seat and bleeder screw before you do the above.
The bleeder screw must point up to remove all the air, so make sure you don't have your calipers on the wrong sides. Some are marked RH and LH but if they came on a front steer car like a Chevelle, they can be marked wrong for a Camaro.

neonblue 69 Apr 12th, 04, 02:06 PM David I think I may have found my problem. Over the winter I installed a new set of headers, on the drivers side it looks like I may have bent a line coming out the mc. I'll have a better idea once I bleed the brakes. Thank You for your help! John

neonblue 69 Apr 15th, 04, 04:11 PM I'm still having problems with the rf. I unkinked the brake line and now the rotor will stop when the pedal is pushed. After bleeding the back the pedal feels great, but the front goes to the floor. When I start the car to move it forward the rf wants to lock up. Thanks John

I don't understand how the "pedal feels great" but "the front goes to the floor"???
If the line got kinked bad enough the front brakes didn't work, it needs to be replaced.

neonblue 69 Apr 15th, 04, 04:50 PM Sorry David I've beat my head in with this thing. After bleeding the rear brakes the pedal feels strong when I bleed the rf the pedal goes soft. I think the line is ok. I may have to have it towed to a shop. I'm kinda at my limit with my abilities. Thanks for your help John
davidpozzi Apr 15th, 04, 05:04 PM It sounds like some kind of blockage if it's binding but I don't know where.
The low pedal after bleeding could be air sucking in through a fitting some where. When you close the bleeder after bleeding and release the brake pedal, there is a vaccum in the line while the master cyl piston returns, that could be sucking in air but from where?
check your brake hose to caliper attachment points, make sure you installed new copper washers and the banjo bolts are not bottoming out in the calipers.
I think it needs to go to the brake shop!

neonblue 69 Apr 15th, 04, 05:31 PM David thank you for your patience. I'm going to work with it for a couple of days and then Mon. try to get her to the shop. Thanks again John
