All chevelle SS cars were big block cars. The malibus were the small block version.

69Camaro,
To clarify, in 69, all SS cars had big-blocks with the 396 being the 'base' engine and 454 as an option, as well as several hi-po versions of the 396. I believe this is true for all Chevelles from 68 thru 70. In 71, the Chevelle changed and went to a 350 as the 'base' engine in the SS version. If you need/want more chevelle info, check out Team Camaro's sister site at www.chevelles.com (http://www.chevelles.com) .
Hope that helps,
Bill C.

Sorry, you still dont have it quite right. All 66-70 SS cars were big blocks, 396's. The 454 wasnt available until 70. In 70 you could get a 396 (actually 402) or the 454. In 71 you could get a small block in the SS's. I have heard you COULD get the 307 in an SS, but i've never seen one. The 350 was the small block most SS cars came with.

Ron has it right, and I also have never seen a 307 SS, lowest engine option I have seen is the 350 in 71/2.

The cool thing about 66-68 Chevelles is you could tell by the first part of the VIN whether or not the car was an SS396 because in those years it was its own separate model. I love my 68 SS396 (http://www.tcg158.homestead.com/files/drvr.jpg)(454 http://www.camaros.net/forum/wink.gif)
