This is probably a silly question, but how do I tell if I have the close ratio power steering box. It takes about 2 1/2 turns lock-to-lock and feels pretty tight.

2 and a half is as good as it gets!
Congratulations.

Thanks, David. I thought it was a close ratio by driving it, but with all the stuff out there I thought i'd get some advice.

David, I rechecked the steering today (forgot how to count, I guess). It is just a tad over 3 turns lock-to-lock. I guess this is the "close-ratio" box?
There is also the usual play on center. I'd like to tighten this up a bit. If my memory (from 30 years ago) serves me correctly, I can take out a little of the play by tightening the lock screw/nut combo on top of the box. Is this correct?
Thanks for your advice. It's great to have access to the experts! http://www.camaros.net/forum/smile.gif

Dunno how expert I are!
I've probably made more mistakes than most but I learned from them!
Mainly, I'm one of those "lets read the manual" types.
Set the steering straight ahead and centered.
Loosen the lock nut and turn the allen screw down to take up the lash. Don't go crazy turning the allen or the steering will get "stickey" on center. just turn it down firmly.
Tighten the nut.
Two things about the steering ratio.
Some late boxes have internal stops that will prevent acheving as much wheel angle as a normal first gen. IE they will not hit the stops on the steering arms before the box itself stops.
There are two length pitman arms and two length outer steering arms.
For fastest steering, get the long pitman and short outer steering arms.
I have photos and dimensions on my first gen suspension page.

Thanks, David. I've checked out your web page; awesome! You have put a lot of thought and effort into it.
I'm going to measure the arms and compare them to your page tomorrow.
By the way, my tires do rub the frame at full turn, if that means anything.
Maybe I'll run into you at Laguna Seca sometime. I used to race FV there and at Sears Point. It was a blast. I just didn't have the resources ($$$) to continue.
Thanks again.
