I just completed the guldstrand mod on my 69 camaro today and started grinding for A-arm clearance. My question is: "how much should i take off in order for the control arm to have full motion, while maintaining structural strength.

Nasty,
What I did was after the holes were drilled, I just bolted on an A-arm, let it drop onto the support, then eyeballed where I was going to cut. You can scribe a cut line if you want. A Saws-All made very quick work of the cuts.
If you don't mind wading through a few pictures, take a look at my HobbyStage page and you'll see what mine look like. A couple other folks here have links to pictures of theirs also.
Good luck.

do exactly as stated, then you can weld in some, new metal on top, to strengthen it, and make it look clean, I can email you a pic of mine if you like.
