View Full Version : Which axle is better? JayBird Feb 4th, 04, 07:43 AM I am looking at superior axles and Moser Eng. axles for my 69. Which do you prefer and why. thanks, a67 Feb 4th, 04, 09:28 AM I can't say whether one is better then the other. However (!!), my Moser axles have the c-clip groove cut too wide. This results in the axles banging due to excessive end play. Bob. Mean 69 Feb 4th, 04, 09:36 AM I went with Tom's KA axles for my car. They are not as widely known, but as I understand their heat-treating is second to none, and their axles are as good as you can buy on the market (or better!). Very freindly and knowledgable guys, and the axles came very quickly. Fit perfect, and a great price. Try them, you'll like them. I think you can find them by doing a search on Tom's Differentials. I'd like to know if that's typical or not. chicane67 Feb 4th, 04, 07:41 PM HSJ, I dont know if I would call it typical, but I have had that problem (and quite a few others) with Moser products. I wont say that it is just related to them either, as I have had the same problems with quite a few of Currie's products as well. Tom gets his axles machined from FOOT and then has them heat treated to his specification's. I agree with you Mark, I havent found a better stock replacement axle out there (which is why I sent you that way), that has what he offers for so little money. They are actually quite a bit stronger than factory axles, and most other replacement type available as well. Tom doesnt do any advertisement, so he isnt really known to the 'masses' but those of us who have been in the differential niche, know that he and his company are amoungst the 'top end' in the business. Hands down, probably top two or three in the industry. Tom's Differential (http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/) Give 'Zeus' a call and see what he can do for your needs. HwyStarJoe Feb 5th, 04, 03:16 AM That's news to me, about the c-clip grooves. Glad someone said something. I'd think it'd be a simple trick to produce thicker c-clips. Do you think there's a reason some have a wider groove? Do you think it's on purpose? Should be simple enough to shim I guess. Davez28 Feb 5th, 04, 03:39 AM Hwy I think I read in Camaro Untold Scerets that when GM developed the JL8 package they used a thicker C-Clip to reduce the end play in the axle due to the solid mounted caliper. Its been a while since I read it so I could be wrong, but it might be something to look into. Dave JayBird Feb 5th, 04, 09:56 AM Thanks for the reply's. I went with Tom's Differentials. Rolled splines instead of cut splines. Flange is drilled for 7/16" press-in's or 1/2 screw-in studs. Best of all was price. Beat Moser adn the rest by alot. Very nice guy as well. chicane67 Feb 5th, 04, 01:46 PM HSJ, that is what the recommended fix should be. However, GM...nor anyone else makes c-clips that are available in different thicknesses. You pretty much have to have a pile of them and mic out the thinkest ones to fit the needs. Dave, you are correct and hit it right on the head. Jay, glad to hear they took care of you. HwyStarJoe Feb 5th, 04, 04:33 PM Ah! Thanks you guys. Glad to hear it Jay. graemlins/thumbsup.gif http://www.tomsdifferentials.com/ CarlC Feb 5th, 04, 05:21 PM I agree with Tom about Tom's. I too have the axle and large Furd bearing housing ends from Tom's. After dealing with C-clip eliminators, I'll never go back. |
