"Restoring" a 69 Nova with a 12 bolt rear and stock drum brakes.

I would like to replace the drums with new ones and remember seeing an article about aluminum drum availability on some Firebirds, etc (later model of course).

Wondered if anyone offers aluminum jobs for older 12 bolt applications...to save a few pounds, etc.?

Thanks

I can't directly answer your question, but try to find the ones that are lined with cast iron so wear is significantly reduced. I've seen a few that aren't, and they don't last long.

Yes, try around '77 or so 'bu stuff or the clones.

They are bolt-on and are hard to find b/c they aren't made anymore. And they all have cast-iron inserts for wear resistance! pdq67

Here's a couple of notes I clipped and saved from past posts on Aluminum Drums.

Some late 78+ G-body cars (Monte Carlo, Malibu, Cutlass, Regal) and some of the 84+ Camaros and Firebirds had the small 9" aluminum rear drums.

I also have a set of 9" aluminum drums which came off the rear of my 86 Pontiac Parisienne (glorified Bonneville)

Well contacted friend at Chevrolet dealership...they sell new ones for about 100 bucks. They measure 9.5 X 2 inches.

Don't have any more info than that right now, but does that sound like a 12 bolt application? Are the rears all the same (12 bolt, 10 bolt, etc)?

I measured my current drums and they are 9.5 in diameter, but seem to be closer to 2.5 inches for swept width...

Thanks again for the help.

Boy that's good to hear about them still being available. They are real cool all polished behind an open wheel!

They may be off a S/W, b/c some were 2.5" wide vs the stock cast-iron ones at 2.0", (I think??).pdq67

Well, at this time they aren't available... http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif

I recieved them and pulled them out and they weighed 5 pounds MORE than my stock drums (14 vs 9 pounds)!

Checked them with a weight and they seem to be all cast iron... http://www.camaros.net/forum/frown.gif

Quieried the parts man and he says what happened was the cast iron drum turns out to be a suitable substitute.

Oh well, I can now spend the 200 dollars on something else...maybe some new brakelines!

Thanks for the help.
