Can 4 be used in place of 3?

Providing the DOT3 is flushed completely out?

The reason I ask, I have a pressure brake bleeder filled with DOT 4. I'd hate to pour out 4 in the machine and replace with DOT 3 and comtaminate the 3 with residual 4.

The DOT 4 bottle reads exceeds DOT 3 specs, boils at 312*F.

Thanks, Everett

They should be compatable, unless the DOT 4 is some kind of synthetic.

They should be compatible. I love/use Castrol LMA Dot4 and it will readily mix with DOT3.

Thank you for your answers.

I'm using the same, Castrol LMA Dot 4, OE fluid for BMW, since I have one for my go to work car, 88 325iC.

As above, no problem. I prefer the DOT4 as it doesn't remove paint as readily as DOT3. Nice feature in case there's a spill.
