View Full Version : Lowering blocks with Hotchkis suspension?
MStennes Feb 18th, 04, 06:43 AM I was lookng at my 69 today and it still seems to sit alittle high in the rear (not more than a 1") and has a noticeable rake to it. What I'm wondering is with my full front and rear Hotckiss suspension will this affect my handling if I use a 1" lowering block? Iwant that stance that DJD has on his vert.
Thanks,
Mike
davidpozzi Feb 18th, 04, 08:50 PM Supposedly you can use up to a 1" thick lowering block. More than that can cause problems like wheel hop. Some aftermarket rear shackles are longer than stock which can raise the car too.
Second gen Camaro front spring mounts will raise the car a little. Make sure yours are first gen. The first gen front mounts can be redrilled to lower a bit but there isn't much room to lower more than 3/8" to 1/2".

69Huggrrr Feb 19th, 04, 03:38 AM I'm pretty sure I read on a previous post by DjD that he removed the rubber spring pad. This lowered the car another 3/8". Don't quote me as I'm sure DjD will chime in.
MStennes Feb 19th, 04, 04:58 AM The whole suspension is Hotchkis - springs front & rear, swaybars, front & rear, u bolts, shackles, and the rear spring shouck mounts, etc.
Thanks,
Mike
DRJDVM Feb 19th, 04, 07:09 PM Mine was the same way.... about 3 weeks ago I put 1 inch lowering blocks in the back..... I like the stance much better now..... I left the upper rubber pad out, so the overall difference in height was about 3/4 inch.... now the distance from the ground to the wheelwell is about 1/4 inch higher for the back than the front..... I think if I used the pad, the front would look too high relative to the back...my pix are before the suspension setled at all and before the blocks, so dont use those as a reference...
Ryan67 Feb 20th, 04, 05:06 AM removing the upper rubber pad and not replacing it with a block will raise the car, not lower it. anything you put above the spring will lower the car.
DjD Feb 20th, 04, 06:15 AM Ryans correct, correct I gained about 3/16" from the center of the hub to the fender lip by removing the pad. Mike - What about the front spring cups? There has to be something different to effect your height by an inch. Did you tighten the shackle bolts before putting the weight of the car on the suspension? Can you give us the measurement from the fender lip to the center of the hub? I want to say mine is 12" but I'll double check and post back...
DRJDVM Feb 20th, 04, 10:24 AM I guess you misunderstood my post....... I used the rubber pad under the spring (like usual) but only used the block above the spring (no rubber pad above the spring, so leaf spring, block, rearend perch)..... so compared to the way I had it before, with the rubber pad on both sides of the spring, with the 1 inch lowering block, I really obtained a NET of 3/4 inch lower than the way I had it before........
If I used the rubber pad above, with the 1 inch block (leaf spring, block, rubber pad, perch), I would have lowered everything 1 inch compared to the "before" height
Does that make more sense ???

How are things in Manteca (doesn't that mean Lard in spanish?)? ;)
MStennes Feb 20th, 04, 01:15 PM Dennis,
If I remember right I tighned everything up in the air?? Is that a nono? Hey I can send some digitals to you so you can see what I mean if youd like? I also used both pads top and bottom and they fit without trimming should they have been trimmed?
Thanks,
Mike
DjD Feb 20th, 04, 03:44 PM The front of the leaf spring can be bolted up tight but the car should be on the suspension fully before tightening the upper and lower bolts in the shakles. Shoot me a pic or two, and measure from the hub center if the wheel up to the fender lip. I'd like to see how much difference there is in mine. If the pads fit without triming that's a good thing in my book.
