I was wondering how many speakers were actually in a 69 Camaro. Cause im gonna custom make a cd player mount so i dont have to cut up the original place in the radio slot. And i need to know what size and how many speakers i need. Thanks!

Lots of options... I think the Stereo Multiplex came with 4, 1 in each kick panel and 2 in the package tray. I believe you could also get just 1 speaker in the dash or 1 in the dask and 1 in the package tray. I don't know if the dash speaker was deleted with the 4 speaker stereo or not...

I don't have any first hand on the 2nd gen but I would venture to say a 4 speaker option was available.

my car has room for 2 4x6's in the dash but some idot before me cut holes in the rear for 2 6x9's and it looks like he used a can opener! http://www.camaros.net/forum/mad.gif I had also thought of sticking 2 in the kick panels where the vents are since i don't use them

While we're on this subject, where did rear speakers go in a convertible? I see speaker housing for sale in the catalogs.

The housings are mounted to the seat back under the well cover. If the top were put down I don't think you would hear much...

I agree with Dennis about the number and location of speakers in a first gen. FYI, I put a Kenwood stereo system in my 67. I put two 6x9" 4-ways in the package tray (I had to cut out the holes a little bit bigger) and two 4" two-ways in the kick panels. I put the speakers in the kick panels where the OE kick panel speakers would have gone, as far close to the seat edge of the kick panel as they would go. If you take a kick panel off, there is a cavity in the body in this spot. I carefully measured (the speakers have to be fairly shallow) and cut the holes with a scroll saw. The speakers I used in the kick panels were the Blaupunkt Overdrive 4" 2-way speakers. The fit like they are supposed to be there and sound awesome!!! If anyone has any questions about the particulars of the installation, feel free to contact me. I also made a custom mount out of aluminum sheetmetal to mount a Kenwood 10 disc changer where the glovebox used to be.

i omitted the glove box, and fabricated a special box out of light sheet metal with masonite back. Took lots of trial and error to get it right. Then mounted a modern CD player through the masonite back. For front speakers, I fabricated a masonite mounting plate for 2 4" 3 way speakers. I cut off the frame of my original front 4x10 and screwed it onto the face of the mounting board, and re-installed the rubber gasket. Covered it with light grille cloth, and fabricated a new mounting bracket. For rear speakers, I mounted 6x9's from under the package tray, and covered them with repopped original grille covers. My speaker holes has been hogged out, too, like they had been cut out with pliers! It took quite a bit of patience and a little welding to repair, but now it looks "almost" original.
Regular radio was single 4x10 in dash. Single rear speaker was optional. Multiplex used speaker holes cut in the kick panels, and two rear speakers (I think--could be one rear speaker, as pass side is not cut like driver side.)

It's been around 2 years now that I have been coming to this BB, and know I have finally decided to join here. Maybe now I can get off my butt and get my car back on the road. Dennis, my Stereo Multiplex System came with 5 speakers, 2 in the kick panels, 2 in the package tray, and 1 in the dash. The system itself is mounted under the console cover in the console. I guess since my console came with the full gauge package, the factory did it this way. I have only seen it like this on one other camaro and it was a 69/RS.

Ricks68RS,

I tried getting to that website with no luck. Is there a simpler "www. etc...."?

Thanks,
