View Full Version : Performance Drum shoes? Do they make a big difference?
backfire Mar 25th, 01, 02:40 PM I know thw best thing to do is change to discs but I have seen something lately about drum shoes from a company called PraiseDyno. They cryogenically treat their brake shoes and say they increase heat resistance over 60% due to changes in the molecular structure of the materials. Yeah right, it all sounds well and good but do they really work? This guy is trying to tell me I can get close to disc performance with drums. Any testimonials or info to the contrary. They are within an hour's drive of my house if I want to buy them--also mucho dinero.
davidpozzi Mar 25th, 01, 03:14 PM I would guess they are better than what you could buy at a discount auto parts store.
But with the way drum brakes are self energizing, you won't get that close in braking CONTROLL. the front shoe pushes on the rear shoe, and at the point of wheel lockup, it jams and locks up.
If you want to try them try on the front, that's the most bang for the buck as the front does most of the work.

RickD Mar 26th, 01, 04:12 AM A while back, CHP did a 0-100-0 test. Interestingly enough, Editor Smith's chevelle with recently rebuilt drums did mid-pack against disc setups. Of course, fade entered the picture in repeated stops. It led me to think about drums for my street car given there is a bit of a weight savings ( how's that for being anal ). Anyway, I think power drums have their place if in top notch condition. Don't flame me, guys.
chev64 Mar 26th, 01, 07:44 AM backfire, go to www.chevelles.com (http://www.chevelles.com) and look up a post by 427L88 and send him an e-mail, I think that he put their shoes on the front of his 67 Chevelle and is quite satisfied with them.

If you have no fear, you're not going as fast as you could.

Lance,
I don't know about any cryogenically improved shoes, I use their Kevlar semi-metallics. It is a vast improvement over stock shoes ( and I did have new ones), but I can honestly say it only rivals a disc setup. Not better than. For a resto, go for it. For a driver, put some discs on.
IMHO anyway....

427L88 Apr 2nd, 01, 04:09 AM I'll share the real back to back, running my 67 Chevelle down the 1.8th and then my buddy 509Camaro asked me to run his car , a 68 Camamro with a front disk setup. Again, just a stock setup thats well maintained. Of course his 68 is much lighter than mine, but I still felt more stopping power with the discs.
Also, no matter what, with drum brakes, especially at the end of a 91 mph 1.8 or 117 mph 1/4 mile run, man you just never know which way she's going to swerve when you stand on them. http://www.camaros.net/forum/eek.gif
Parise are MUCH MUCH better than stock and do not seem to exhibit fade at all. The seem to work better when warmed up, but not like the old Lakewood metallics which didn't work at all until warm.
BTW< i have them on all 4 corners.

They are about an hour or so from my house. I'll head over there sometime soon to pick up a set.
