View Full Version : aerospace comp. install questions (boodlefoof)
CamaroNOTcamero Mar 27th, 02, 07:22 PM about the back plate that holds the caliper, when putting in the bottom bolt, do i use a washer as a spacer to get it aligned correctly, and so it doesnt flex.
About the disk, do i install it infront or behind the peice that holds it. (i shouldnt have used thread lock the 1st time, DOH!)
So far so good otherwise, even my lungs are holding up (knock on wood) i have my new master cyl/power booster in, the power booster is tiny compaired to the old lug, and the master is huge!
boodlefoof Mar 28th, 02, 04:17 AM Hmmmm.... it has been awhile since I've done anything with them. Also, I am currently down at school and won't be able to get to the car to check for about another month or a little more...
The washer being used as a spacer sounds right. Just make sure you get the caliper square to the rotor of course.
I am pretty sure that the disk installs behind (in towards the car) the hat.
Good luck with it, and with your continued recovery.
CamaroNOTcamero Mar 28th, 02, 05:41 AM thanks boodle, now i gotta take it back apart, my dumba$$ forgot to put the wheelstuds in.
CamaroNOTcamero Mar 28th, 02, 06:35 PM Boodle, did you have to shim out the backing plate a little to get the caliper to align correctly? its not a big deal, but i was wondering.
I'm almost done with one side, just got a few gray areas.
boodlefoof Mar 28th, 02, 07:04 PM I really don't remember. I do remember that the caliper mounting plate had some depressions on one side around the bolt holes and some shim like protrusions on the opposite sides that were confusing to me. I don't remember which way they ended up going on though.
Sorry to not be of more help. If you still aren't done in a few weeks, I can get you pictures of everything... but I am sure you want the car back on the road before then.
Good luck.
CamaroNOTcamero Mar 29th, 02, 06:23 AM Dont worry about it, i'll just shim it, i'm being careful not to do anything stupid. I need the car done in a few days, so it'll be out before you get a change.
thanks anyway though.
CamaroNOTcamero Mar 29th, 02, 06:07 PM Boodle, one more you may know at of memory, whats with these calipers, i look inside them and it looks like there is just 4 bores, and no pistons, whats the deal?
boodlefoof Mar 29th, 02, 09:19 PM no pistons? Are you sure?
CamaroNOTcamero Mar 30th, 02, 05:20 AM i've never dealt with an aftermarket brake system, and there directions are sh*tty, i dont know if these are the pistons, and you have to stomp on the brakes to get them to push out or somethign.
When i look into the calipers, i see 4 cone type "bores" but nothing that looks like it moves against the pad.
Maybe i have to really bleed out the brakes good first or something.
boodlefoof Mar 30th, 02, 05:43 AM I do remember that the supplied instructions sucked, but I have no idea about the pistons. sorry to say.
I might try to get home to earlier than first anticipated... perhaps next weekend or the weekend after. If you are still having trouble, and I do in fact get back, I will take a look for you.
pdq67 Mar 30th, 02, 07:29 AM I think you are looking at the inside bore of the outside of each piston. This area is hidden behind the pad. The pad should ride on each pistons end circumference(sp?), Like on the end of an open can. Hope this helps. pdq67
CamaroNOTcamero Mar 30th, 02, 10:10 AM Maybe i am looking at the pistons, and dont realise it, i'm used to GM's big flat type pistons.
Boodle, i'll e-mail you if i'm still have trouble towards the end of the week.
thanks guys.
