: brake caliper urgent question

Hi,

I have removed my worn one piston calipers, but i didn't look at it to see if there are V shaped 69 calipers.
I know :
- the width between the 2 bolts screwed on the bracket is 7 inch.
- the piston caliper is 2.67 inch (68mm) in diameter, this is quite big.

You told me :
There are rebuild kits available but they usually only come with the O-rings. The piston is offered as a seperate component.
For $13.49 each you can get rebuilt, unloaded (no pads) calipers from http://www.rockauto.com If you want a Raybestos rebuilt caliper with pads it's just over $33 each. Rockauto has some of the lowest prices on new and rebuilt parts.

what i can do :
#1 I can make my calipers completly rebuilt for 260 €, which is a lot !
#2 I can buy new rebestos calipers for 30 $.
#3 I can upgrade with PBR calipers and new rotors but i need fitting under a 15" rallye wheel...And this solution doesn't exist...
#4 i notice my rotors are not flat. There are the type with a line crossing a circle at mid diameter.

My questions are
#1 Does somebody know of the caliper i may have? do you recognize 2.67 " diameter calipers? are they bigger calipers then 69 calipers?
#2 Are rebestos calipers really the same quality as my actual calipers? because the price seems really low so i wonder.
I am even ready to pay 260€ for the rebuilt, it seems OK to me.
If you ensure me the reybestos calipers will brake as good as if i rebuilt my old ones, then i pay that of course. of not, then i might consider the next question.
And which are the most performent raybestos calipers i can buy, that will be a perfect bolt on?
(distance between the 2 bolts screwed on the bracket is 7 inch, and rotor thickness is 1")
#3 a PBR Brake upgrade that fits under a 15" wheel?
#4 If ever i decide to upgrade with C5 PBR caliper on a 12" rotor (and 16"wheels then), i can find the bracket, but i still miss the info concerning the right master cylinder and booster to use with rear drum brakes. i looked on all the web pages and it seems still unclear.
#5 about jl8 corvette brakes, the rotor is wider and it fits under a 12" rallye. the caliper needs to stand 1/4" more of thickness, and i think the system might cost a lot.

Thanks to help me decide what to do.

The stock '69 calipers if the big single piston ones are 2-15/16" piston diameter if this will help and it is common to a bunch of cars after '69..

And the '72/'78 or so truck/van caliper is the same except the pad jaw is a 1/4" wider b/c the rotor it is used with is 1.25" thick vs about 1.0" thick for a stock '69 car.

The 81-up Chevy pickup had 2 brake setups,
the JB1 system used a 1" rotor (light duty brakes) and the JB5 which had the 1 1/4" rotor.

Just another donor vehicle that the 1" rotor calipers can be gottem from.

You can make the commonly posted "do it yourself" PBR calipers with the 12" rotor fit in a 15x7 ralley wheel- I did it on my car, only had to sand about 1/8" off the fins on the calipers at the corner to make it clear. (and add a 3/16" wheel spacer) More info on the brackets, p/n's etc are on Dave Pozzi's website. -Dan

The stock calipers should have a bore of 2.9375" yours sound like the later model "metric" calipers. I believe they have the same bolt hole distance and will fit a 1" thick rotor, but the boure size is smaller than older calipers.

Some disc brake kits have calipers like this.

You might compare your calipers to a third gen -1985 Camaro front caliper.
The Metric calipers have less metal out near the bolt holes than the early calipers.

Here is a photo of the GM metric caliper http://www.behrents.com/Merchant2/graphics/en-US/graphics/00000001/usb7241-9003.jpg

Tyler TeeteJones claim the following part to built a C5 brake system. I still miss the master cylinder . SHould be good if the master cylinder worked with my booster.
-drum spindle/hub from 1st gen
-97+ C5 caliper, or Zo6 caliper, or 98+ Fbody caliper (all the same)
-98+ Fbody caliper basket
-98+ Fbody rotor (12" only.)
-98+ Fbody front brake line
-new bearings and lug studs
-My brake bracket (CNC laser cut)

Camaro6speed, did you make that swap fit under a 15" ralley wheel?

If so, i am very interested by that swap and still need to know which master cylinder i need... please advice on these two points, thank you. I want to keep my rear drums.

Thanks,
Marc

front what i found out,
- if i go with manual brakes : 77 Malibu with manual brakes. it has a 15/16" bore
- if i go with power brakes : ???

i am scared of a too hard brake pedal with manual brakes, but Novaderrick made it so why not...

what is the part number of that master cylinder?

where can i buy everything i need for the whole brake swap?

could we go through everything i need one more time over part number of tricky parts? like the basket, brake lines, hub seal, wheel studs, bearings, ...

What does that mean : "machine shop (to level the upper anchor point on a drum spindle with the lower steering arm hole, and a lathe to take out the OD of the hub.)"

Thanks for your help.

Marc,

Yes, I made it fit under a 15" rally rim. (15x7 4.25" backspace actually)

Master cylinder- I'm using the master power dual diaphram booster and their 1" bore master cylinder, and a electric vacuum pump. The feel is good but still a bit stiff. I have a 90's corvette master cylinder that I am going to try and adapt this winter and see what that does. It should be fine for my car since I have the 90's vette disks on the rear also.

Email me if you want and I should have a few pictures of the front brakes.

Happy Holiday's.

hi guys, merry christams !

Thank you for your help,
well, i got my calipers from the shop, I don't want to pay 260€ to have them rebuilt. SO I decide i will upgrade to C5 brakes. But i forgot something : to get all the parts here it will take me at least 2 - 3 months (cheap by boat). And so If i do the 'brake upgrade' this year, i won't be able to drive the car inb the summer. It is wiser if i now order the parts and next year i will upgrade to C4 or C 5brakes.

So today i took my calipers appart, cleaned the bore and piston, and i think i 'll assemble everything back that way because the piston is very nice. BUT i need new seals, specially the dust piston seal, the big one in front at the outside of the piston

if you know where i can find that dust piston seal, tell me ! i need that rubber seal to rebuilt my brakes.

And still am interezsted by the C5 upgrade, that i will install in the winter 2004 - 2005.

Happy celebrations !

Oh David ... I have that GM metric caliper like on your photo. 68 mm bore diameter.

Marc, then you will need seals from a third gen Camaro with iron calipers which is from 83 through 93, I think. The 1LE camaro had a corvette aluminum caliper but otherwise I think they all had that metric caliper.
