I mean besides the engine choices and the "beak" in the front of the firebird, are there really any differences, in the way they ride, etc.?

I have a 67 Camaro and my brother has a 68 Firechicken (I mean Firebird). besides the front fender's and nose area (core support forward) there are small difference's in wiring/ emblems/ upholstery, etc. But the biggest difference is that the Firebird is heavier on the front (by almost 400 lb.s on our two cars but it depends on the options) which can make for a softer ride but also makes the car push through a corner (understeer).

Having had several of each over the years the one thing I have noticed is that the Firebird's seemed to have more options on the whole. Also more insulation (under dash, inside rocker panels ect. A few years back I was picking up clean, one woman owner, unmodified, garage kept Firebird's for the same price ragged, wrecked, rusted basic, Camaro's were going for. The 67-68 Firebird uses a curved pitman arm ( to clear exhaust), I think. the dash knobs are different too, as well as the rear leaf springs and rear end (wider springs & external axle retainers instead of C clips. In 69 the Camaro dash was changed, the Firebird dash was only modified but all of the steering linkage was changed. Uh let’s see...Camaro changed the console in 68, Firebird added wood grain to the same console. All though very similar in interior and exterior appearance there are many differences, most of the interior differences are subtle.
Exterior are more noticeable : Hood, front bumper, tail lights. Mechanical are very different: engine, transmission case (auto) bell housing, rear end and leafs. But it will all interchange as long as you use accompanying parts ie: f bumper & hood, rear end & leafs, engine & tranny.

Have you seen a company that sells patch panels for the rear quarter panels.Specifically in front of the rear wheel were the simulated vents are located.I have a friend who is looking to replace that and the tail lights panel.

Classic Industries use to; I haven’t seen a catalog in years. Another company called Aims or Ames might have them.

lets not forget the rear tail lights, the side marker lights being "birds" on the 68+ models,

and the front and rear valance, the headlight assembly's, interior options, the "uniblock" pontiac motors. (were they around in 67? )
