: Source for attachment hardware?

I'm trying to replace some of the bits and pieces of hardware on my Faux Touring '69.... castle nuts, cotter pins, etc.... without buying it thru an aftermarket joint. I'm not having much luck finding this stuff!

The home stores have castle nuts, pins and all that jazz but I question using it in a suspension. None of the parts houses have what I need either. At least not on the shelf.
Where else can I find automotive grade fastneres locally?

There are probably other places, but try a local Peterbuilt truck shop. They have grade 8 hardware and probably all the stuff you'd need. The one near me has Rockford bolts.

Also check for an industrial fastener supply company, a place that supplys welding and fabrication shops. Maybe your local welding supply company can point you to one.

Near and around me are the garden variety hardware stores (not to use ) and a good quality one ( use ). Also, there's an industrial supply shop that supplies the local machinists. Aircraft Spruce is excellent as Carl mentions. Also, NAPA. For bolts I especially use grade 8. Those I bought from Totally Stainless (1-800-767-4781)for the UCA/LCA.

For grade 8, the local NAPA carrys them here. Also, "Tractor Supply Company" sells them by the pound. Pick up a sack of bolts and a salt block for the livestock at the same time.

Alright... I'll hunt around some more.

Do you think a GM dealership would be able to supply this type of thing if I provide part numbers from the AIM?

I'd order all the hardware online in a heartbeat if I wanted to pay 12 times what I can get it for locally.

I have found two stores near me that sell only fasteners. I take a handful of grade 8 stuff to the counter, and the guy says that will be $2. He also sell bags of clips, star washers, pins, etc for a couple bucks each. If I were you, I would look for a store that sells fasteners specifically. Try the phone book or look on the internet for commercial listings. Ask around at REAL parts places. The people at Autozone or Pep Boys usually don't have a clue, but the old timers working the independent parts stores know where to find these types of places. This is how I found my bolt places and places to buy sandblasting media, powedercoat, and a couple other things.

There's a supplier by me ( part of a chain ) called Fastenal.

I think their site is www.Fastenal.com (http://www.Fastenal.com) They may have a dealer near you.

Well, whatta ya know? There's one right up the street from where I work, AND near where I live. I've never heard of or seen them before in my life.
Man, I gotta open my eyes more or I'm not looking in the right phonebook catagory or something.

Thanks Rick!! If one place doesn't have it... the other should.

I've never heard of them either but went to their site and sure enough there's one in Simpsonville. Actually looks like there all over the place. I kinda got the impression they might not be into selling a couple of bolts a few washers. Good find either way. graemlins/thumbsup.gif

According to their Company Overview, "Plans for expansion at Fastenal include a continued commitment to customer service. Our Customer Service Project (CSP) is an ongoing effort to improve the buying experience for our walk-in and retail customers, and the lessons learned are already fueling company expansion. Major financial publications such as Forbes, Financial World, INC. Magazine, Worth, and Business Week have all recognized Fastenal's phenomenal growth."

So I'm assuming they won't look at me crooked when I walk in. smile.gif

Oh yeah, they'll looked at you crooked but for a different reason. smile.gif I was just looking at their price list and it looks like every thing is sold in boxes, no onezies or twozies.

I saw that too.... but some of what I need was singles.... a little expensive, but at least it won't fall apart like the Tiawan Tin fasteners you buy at the home stores.
