View Full Version : Steering Box Adjustment

I've got a manual box and have adjusted the top adjuster to it's max position. The box is leaking a rusty colored fluid. I've got a good bit of sawing in the steering wheel. David mentioned being able to adjust the end plug too. How is this done and would this possibly fix the problem?

I've got another used manual box, but don't know if it's any better than the one I've got. How to check? It has 6 1/2 turns to swing the pitman arm through it's full range. What ratio is this likely to be?

There is a fast box and a slow box. The fast box is around 2.2 turns lock to lock, I think.
There is a web page that shows rebuild of Manual boxes. I'll try to find the URL.

Thanks for the reply David. Any details on rebuild or even adjustment would be handy.

Didn't find the link. I've seen a page detailing adjustment.
There is a nut on the end of the manual box. I think you loosen the nut and turn something there. It's where the end plug would be on a PS box.
It adjusts end play of the input shaft.

It sounds like you need a rebuild. Maybe send it off for a rebuild or check locally for rebuild parts.

David, I'm in Santa Cruz through Sunday on business. Beautiful country around here. Do you live in this area?
