Is there anything that can be applied to the disc to keep them from getting surface rust that collects when they are not being used. It is going to be months before it is road ready.
Thanks,
Guy

View Full Version : Rusty disc? gjohnson Apr 18th, 04, 02:36 PM Is there anything that can be applied to the disc to keep them from getting surface rust that collects when they are not being used. It is going to be months before it is road ready. Thanks, Guy novaderrik Apr 19th, 04, 09:35 PM i've heard of using good old WD-40- then you just spray a can of brake cleaner on it when you are ready to drive it to take the stuff off. gjohnson Apr 20th, 04, 05:01 PM I wonder if a light coat of sandable primer from a spray can would work. The only thing I would be concerned about is the brake pads when it takes off the primer. I remeber seeing this topic mentioned, but it has been quite a while back, couldn't find anything in a search. Anyone else? Guy davidpozzi Apr 20th, 04, 06:52 PM I'd go with something like WD-40, I've used it on my race car rotors and it's light enough to go away quickly when the brakes get hot. I'm afraid the primer would not disappear as quickly and leave residue. David Vintage 68 Apr 20th, 04, 07:15 PM I agree with David - no primer. I have used "OSPHO" on many items after cleaning them to protect from rust reforming and to convert the rust on the edges and hubs of 'in-use' Disc.s (and drums) to "black". Ospho holds up very well in this use. I buy the stuff from our local (Orinda, Ca.) hardware store for @$9.00 qrt. I think they are a "True Value" affiliate it that helps. Boat places also carry this stuff. "Google" 'Ospho' for more info. John gjohnson Apr 21st, 04, 01:31 PM Thanks guys. This OSPHO, is this the stuff used to blacken tools and such? I have some stuff call OXPHO BLUE I use to touch up the bluing on guns. It just blackens the metal. Thanks again, Guy gjohnson Apr 21st, 04, 06:12 PM FYI, I used a wire wheel on my 4" angle grinder grinder and buffed the disc to "like new",cleaned with laquer thinner and then used some of my OXPHO bluing chem., they turned out great. The chemical is used for bluing guns and is supposed to help prevent rust. I put a light coat of WD40 just for added protection. Maybe this will hold'em for a while. Thanks, Guy |
